Bandai HG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam (Beyond Global)
The HG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam (Beyond Global) is Bandai Spirits' 40th anniversary reimagining of the original Gundam in the High Grade format. This isn't just another RX-78-2 kit. The Beyond Global release introduced a completely new joint system that delivers a significantly wider range of movement than any previous HG RX-78-2, bringing the original Gundam's articulation up to modern standards while keeping the iconic silhouette intact. If you want the most poseable 1/144 RX-78-2 available in the HG format, this is it.
The HG RX-78-2 Gundam Beyond Global features a new joint engineering system developed for the 40th anniversary release, delivering a wider range of articulation than previous HG RX-78-2 kits while faithfully preserving the original mobile suit's proportions.
This kit is designed for beginner to intermediate builders. The snap-fit system means no glue is required, and the colour separation across the white, red, and blue armour is clean throughout. The full weapons loadout covers the RX-78-2's classic arsenal, and the improved joint system means you can actually get the poses you want without fighting the kit. A strong entry point for new builders and a worthwhile addition for collectors who want the best HG version of the original Gundam.

Builder Notes
The HG RX-78-2 Beyond Global is Bandai's 40th anniversary statement kit, and the engineering justifies the fuss. No polycaps, exceptional articulation for a High Grade, and a single sticker sheet containing exactly one sticker. It builds fast and looks great out of the box. There are a few things worth knowing going in.
Shoulder Ball Joint Sandwich (Long-Term Watch Point): Rather than a conventional ball-and-socket, the shoulder joint uses a ball peg clamped between two friction-fit clamshell parts. The design works well when new but multiple reviewers have flagged it as a future flop risk. As the clamshell friction relaxes over time, the shoulder will start to sag, particularly when the arm is raised outward while holding the beam rifle. If this develops, apply a thin layer of plastic cement to the shoulder ball peg and allow it to set completely before reassembling. A second layer can be added if needed. Nail polish works as an alternative using the same method.
Crotch Block Ejection (Most Common Posing Frustration): The crotch block pops out easily during leg repositioning. This is a direct trade-off for the swinging hip joint system that gives the kit its exceptional leg range. It is more annoying than damaging. The connection uses a tight ball-peg design, so if it becomes a persistent issue rather than an occasional one, a thin layer of plastic cement on the peg will tighten the fit. Allow it to set completely before reattaching.
V-Fin Nub Placement: The V-fin gates are positioned awkwardly on the fin tips, landing on curved and angled surfaces. Cleaning nubs in this spot requires care. Use sharp side cutters, leave a small stub, then pare it back with a sharp hobby knife at a very shallow angle. Rushing this step risks a gouge or a stress mark on a highly visible part. Take the time here.
Helmet Gate on Curved Surface: One gate connection lands on the top curve of the helmet. Single-piece construction eliminates the head seam entirely, which is excellent, but that gate position makes nub cleanup less forgiving. Same approach as the V-fin: cut long, pare back with a hobby knife, and use a fine sanding stick to finish.
Hand Selection: The kit includes a rifle-holding right hand and one open palm, also right. There is no left open palm. This limits certain poses. Plan your display pose around the available hands before committing to a fully assembled build.
Stability Rating: 9/10. The multi-hinge ankle system is a standout. Where ball-jointed ankles on older kits loosen over time, this system stays solid. Reviewers have confirmed the kit can balance on one leg. An Action Base is not needed for standard standing poses. The backpack includes a stand connection point, which is more practical than the crotch hole for dynamic display angles.
The Fixes: Monitor the shoulder ball joint over time and tighten with plastic cement or nail polish at the first sign of sag. If the crotch block pops repeatedly, apply a thin layer of plastic cement to the ball peg and allow to fully set. Take extra care cleaning the V-fin and helmet nubs using a knife at a shallow angle rather than sanding hard across curved surfaces.
