Bandai MG 1/100 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.Ka
The MG 1/100 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.Ka is Hajime Katoki's take on the most iconic mobile suit in Gundam history. The RX-78-2 is where it all started. Amuro Ray's Earth Federation testbed weapon from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series, the unit that defined the entire franchise, and Katoki's Ver.Ka treatment gives it a distinctly sharp, refined character that sets it apart from every other RX-78-2 release. The defining feature here is the designer decal and transfer set, which replaces the standard marking stickers with Katoki's signature precision markings for a panel-marked finish that looks genuinely premium on the shelf.
The MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.Ka is distinguished from other RX-78-2 MG releases by Hajime Katoki's unique designer decal and waterslide transfer set, delivering a markings scheme that reflects his signature Ver.Ka design precision.
This kit is designed for intermediate builders. The Master Grade engineering delivers a solid inner frame beneath the colour-separated white, red, and blue armour, and the full weapons loadout covers the RX-78-2's classic arsenal. If you already have the Ver 2.0 or Ver 3.0 and want to understand what makes the Ver.Ka different, it comes down to the markings and Katoki's proportional refinements. A clean, rewarding build that holds up as a display piece and a meaningful addition to any RX-78-2 collection.

Builder Notes
The MG RX-78-2 Ver.Ka holds a special place in the MG line as the first kit released under the Ver.Ka label, and Katoki's cleaner proportions and restrained design still look great on a shelf. It is an older kit from 2002 and builds accordingly. There are a few things worth knowing before you sit down with it.
Arm Seam Lines (Most Common Build Issue): The arm construction is simpler than modern MG kits — essentially a two-piece shell without a separate inner frame. This leaves a visible seam line on the outer arm, particularly in the shoulder area just below the shoulder armour. Rotating the arm makes the seam more noticeable. The fix is to seal those arm shells with a thin application of Tamiya Extra Thin Cement during the build and allow it to set fully before attaching the shoulder armour. This takes maybe five minutes and eliminates the problem entirely.
Dry Transfer Decals: This kit does not include waterslide decals. It ships with foil stickers and a dry transfer decal sheet. The dry transfers are Katoki's hallmark and there are a lot of them. They go on well when applied carefully, but they will lift and flake over time without protection. Apply all transfers before any topcoat, then seal everything with two light coats of Mr. Hobby Mr. Super Clear (flat or semi-gloss). Do not topcoat the Core Fighter's clear and foil surfaces directly.
Eye Sensor Foil Sticker: The mono-eye camera on the forehead uses a foil sticker. These sit in a recessed area and rarely peel, but the chrome effect can look garish under harsh light. A cleaner result comes from painting the eye recess directly with a silver or metallic green Gundam marker before assembly. It looks more intentional and holds up better long term.
Wrist Joint and Hyper Bazooka Grip: The wrist joint has very limited rotation, which makes posing with the Hyper Bazooka awkward. The kit includes a dedicated hand for holding the Beam Rifle but only a closed fist for everything else. There is no clean way to get a proper two-handed bazooka pose out of this kit. If that matters to you, plan your display pose before fully assembling the arms, as repositioning is easier mid-build than after the fact.
Knee and Ankle Articulation: The legs are solid and well-fitted, but articulation is limited by today's standards. The knee bend is shallow, the feet are flat blocks with no ankle rocker, and the rear skirts are fixed. Do not force the knee joint past its natural range. The internal structure is older tooling and stress marks at the knee joint peg are a known failure point on over-flexed examples. Pick your display pose and commit to it rather than reposing regularly.
Leg Mesh Tubes: The back of the knees uses rubber mesh tubing that you cut to length and install during assembly. The instruction manual provides measurements. Follow them exactly. If a tube is cut short, it will look uneven and replacing it after the fact is frustrating. Cut slightly long, test-fit, then trim.
Stability Rating: 8/10. The wide, flat feet and low centre of gravity make this a stable standing kit. It holds a relaxed standing pose without an Action Base. For weapon-holding poses or any dynamic lean, an Action Base 1 or 4 will take the stress off the hip joint, which is the most likely area to soften over years of display.
The Fixes: Seal the arm shells with Tamiya Extra Thin Cement during the build to eliminate seam lines. Apply all dry transfers before topcoating, then seal with Mr. Hobby Mr. Super Clear. Paint the eye recess with a metallic Gundam marker instead of using the foil sticker. Follow the manual measurements for the knee mesh tubes before cutting. Pick a fixed display pose and avoid repeatedly flexing the knee joints.
