Bandai 1/144 RG GAT-X105 Aile Strike Gundam

The original SEED hero, condensed

Kira Yamato's GAT-X105 Strike Gundam is the suit SEED is built around, and the Aile Strike is its default configuration: the Aile Striker pack for atmospheric and space mobility rather than the heavier Sword or Launcher loadouts. This Real Grade compresses the Master Grade-level engineering the Strike is known for down into a 1/144 kit, and it was the third release in the RG line.

This is the 2011 Real Grade release.

Build difficulty

A genuinely intricate build for the scale. Real Grade kits pack Master Grade-style detail into a smaller footprint, so expect more parts and finer assembly than a standard HG. Nothing requires glue or paint. Reviewers describe it as challenging but rewarding rather than difficult in a frustrating way, and a good step up once you have a few HG builds behind you.

Technical highlights

The Advanced MS Joint frame is the reason RG kits pose the way they do, an engineered inner skeleton rather than simple polycap joints, giving genuine MG-level articulation at 1/144 scale. The Aile Striker pack is included alongside the beam rifle, two beam sabers and shield. Waterslide decals are supplied for markings, and the kit includes an adaptor so it can mount on a Bandai Action Base 1.

What makes this kit special

  • Advanced MS Joint inner frame: proper skeletal engineering rather than simple polycaps, the reason RG kits pose so well for their size.
  • Aile Striker pack: the default high-mobility loadout from the anime, distinct from the Sword and Launcher configurations.
  • Waterslide decals: a more refined marking option than standard stickers, included in the box.
  • Action Base adaptor included: mounts directly onto a Bandai Action Base 1 without needing a separate part.
  • MG-level detail at 1/144: the panel lines and mechanical detail read like a much bigger kit.

What's in the box

  • GAT-X105 Aile Strike Gundam parts, moulded in colour
  • Aile Striker pack
  • Beam rifle
  • Two beam sabers
  • Shield
  • Action Base 1 mounting adaptor
  • Waterslide decal sheet and marking stickers
  • Instruction manual

Compatible accessories

No display base is included with this kit, and with the Aile Striker pack attached it is genuinely back-heavy. A stand is close to essential rather than optional here. Pair it with the Bandai Action Base 1, which the kit's included adaptor mounts to directly.

What to watch for

The Aile Striker pack makes this kit noticeably back-heavy, which is consistent across builder discussion of RG Strike variants generally. With the pack attached the model can struggle to stand unsupported, so treat the stand as close to mandatory rather than optional. The pack connection itself is also reported as having no positive locking peg, which means it holds with a bit of looseness rather than clicking firmly into place.

None of that is unique to this kit specifically, it is a known characteristic of this era of RG design. Reviewers who have built it rate the underlying Advanced MS Joint frame highly once the balance issue is managed with a stand.

Builder tips: mount it on the Action Base 1 whenever the Striker pack is on, using the included adaptor. If the pack connection feels loose, that is normal for this kit rather than a fault, though a small dab of poster putty at the mounting point can tighten it without damaging anything. Handle the RG-specific joints gently, since RG kits use fewer polycaps than HG or MG and are more prone to wear with repeated re-posing.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife, sanding sticks and tweezers for the smaller frame parts. Expect two to three hours. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.3. Basic modeling skills are essential. These kits are not recommended for beginners or children due to the high level of complexity of assembly and the sheer volume of parts. Experience in building more complex Gunpla models is recommended. Parental supervision is essential. A full set of hobby tools is recommended that includes, nippers, hobby knives, sandpaper, sanding sticks, files, buffing files, glues, tweezers, and decal adhesive/softener. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes these Gunpla kits the hottest sellers?

These kits are fan favourites for their detailed design, affordability, and build size, offering a balanced and enjoyable building experience.

Are these hottest seller kits suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! Especially the HG kits, which are known for their fewer parts and simplicity, making them a great starting point for new builders.

What is the level of detail in the MG and RG hottest sellers?

MG kits boast a detailed inner frame and additional parts, while RG combines MG’s complexity with HG’s size for an intricate, compact build.

Can I get replacement parts if I lose some during the build?

Yes, if you buy a kit from Gundam Express Australia we will source replacement parts for you. This is not a quick process as parts need to come from Bandai in Japan.

How much space will I need to display these Gunpla?

HG and RG Gundam kits are compact, while MG Gundam are larger but still manageable. You won’t need too much space to showcase these masterpieces beautifully.
