Space pirates, and a mantle full of skulls

The Crossbone Gundam is what happens when the Universal Century gets a pirate story. The XM-X1 is small, fast and covered in skull motifs, and the Full Cloth version wraps it in a heavy layered mantle that works as both armour and a statement. From the Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam manga, and one of the most distinctive silhouettes Bandai has put into Master Grade.

The detail that sells it: the skulls on the mantle come off and mount on the hands, so the suit can punch with them.

Build difficulty

A full-sized Master Grade with a big accessory count. The assembly itself is snap-fit with no glue required, but there is a lot of it, and the mantle sections plus the weapon load make this a longer sitting than a standard MG. Best suited to a builder who has finished a Master Grade or two. Not a first MG.

Technical highlights

The weapon list is the headline and it is genuinely long: the Muramasa blaster, the Zanbuster, the peacock smasher beam crossbow, a screw whip, the brand marker beam shield, beam sabres, heat daggers and a buster gun. What to watch for

This kit has a mixed reputation and it is worth knowing what that reputation is. The complaints that circulate are that the mantle makes it stiff to pose and that it is prone to toppling. Against that, a builder who actually finished it reported the build as completely fine and said it was nowhere near the brick they had been led to expect. So the picture is genuinely split rather than settled, and I would not present the criticism as established fact.

What is not in dispute is the physics. The Full Cloth mantle is a lot of plastic hanging off the shoulders and back, and the larger weapons add more. Expect to think about balance, and expect a stand to help.

Builder tips: build the core X-1 first and have a look at it before you commit the mantle, because the bare suit is a genuinely good display in its own right. Fit the mantle sections dry before you seat them fully. If you are posing it with the Muramasa blaster out, put it on a stand rather than fighting the balance on the shelf.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife, sanding sticks and tweezers for the smaller skull parts. Budget four to six hours across a couple of sessions given the mantle and the weapon count. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.3. Basic modeling skills are essential. These kits are not recommended for beginners or children due to the high level of complexity of assembly and the sheer volume of parts. Experience in building more complex Gunpla models is recommended. Parental supervision is essential. A full set of hobby tools is recommended that includes, nippers, hobby knives, sandpaper, sanding sticks, files, buffing files, glues, tweezers, and decal adhesive/softener. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you display it without the Full Cloth mantle?

Yes, and it is worth doing at least once. The mantle layers over the core XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam, so you can strip it back and display the much leaner suit underneath with its buster gun and beam sabres. Effectively two looks from one box, which is a big part of why this kit is worth the money.

Do the skulls on the mantle really come off?

They do. The skulls detach from the Full Cloth mantle and mount onto each hand, so the suit can throw punches with them. It is the standout gimmick of the kit and it is exactly as good as it sounds when it is sitting on a shelf.

How stiff is it to pose with the mantle on?

Opinions genuinely differ on this one. The kit has a reputation for being stiff and prone to toppling, but a builder who finished it reported it as nowhere near the brick they had been warned about. I would not start here. Nothing about the assembly needs glue or paint, but the mantle sections and the sheer weapon count make it a longer, more involved build than a standard Master Grade. If you have one or two MG kits behind you it is a good next step. If this is your first, something smaller will be a better experience.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
