Bandai 1/144 RG ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam
The ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam is Kira Yamato's mobile suit for the second half of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, the successor to the original Freedom and one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the whole Cosmic Era timeline. This Real Grade was the first RG kit to mould the inner frame in gold, with the Dragoon remote weapon system, twin beam rifles, and the wing array that defines the design.
Bandai rates this kit Skill Level 2, the same easy-to-complete band as most HGs, and it's snap-fit with the RG inner frame doing the articulation work. It's an older RG tooling (2013), and reviewers consistently flag it as back-heavy once fully built, more on that below.
Technical Highlights
The RG inner frame is moulded in gold plastic rather than painted, which is what earned this kit its reputation as the first gold-frame RG. Eight DRAGOON remote weapons mount directly on the suit, alongside twin beam rifles and beam sabres. Colour separation is handled at the runner level for the white, blue, red and gold panels, no painting required to match the on-screen look.
What Makes This Kit Special
-
Gold-moulded inner frame: the first RG kit to mould the frame in gold rather than paint it, a genuine first for the line.
-
Eight DRAGOON weapons: mount on the suit for the signature spread-fire display look.
-
Twin beam rifles and beam sabres: a full ranged-and-melee weapons set.
-
Expandable wing array: the wings open for the full wingspan display pose.
-
RG-level detail at 1/144: the inner frame treatment gives this small-scale kit mechanical detail HG kits don't carry.

What to Watch For
This is the one thing to know before you buy: reviewers consistently describe this kit as back-heavy once the wings and DRAGOON weapons are fitted, to the point that the ankle joints struggle to hold the pose standing unsupported. An Action Base isn't optional here the way it is on some RG kits, budget for one. Beyond the balance issue, more than one reviewer also flagged the shoulder joints sagging over time under the weight of the dual beam rifles, and the gold-coloured parts on the railgun and abdominal cannon have been criticised as a thinner, less convincing gold than the frame itself. Fitting the beam saber handles into the manipulator hands has also been reported as fiddlier than it should be.
Builder Tips: Plan on an Action Base from the start rather than an afterthought, this kit is not designed to free-stand in most poses. If the shoulders start to sag after repeated posing, a small amount of joint-tightening cement (used sparingly, on the friction points only) restores tension without affecting the swap-in hand parts.
Build Notes
Snap-fit assembly. No glue required for the build itself, though see the joint-tightening note above for long-term posing. Standard Gunpla tools (nippers, hobby knife) are enough to get through this kit. No paint required to match the on-screen look. Expect a 4-6 hour build. Action Base sold separately and strongly recommended, not just suggested. Recommended age 15+.
