The man who would not stop chasing Exia

Graham Aker is the best pilot the Union has, and Gundam 00 spends its first season making that everyone else's problem. This is his personal Flag, tuned to roughly twice the speed of a standard production unit and painted black, built for one purpose: catching a Gundam. He does not have GN technology, he does not have a Trans-Am system, and he keeps coming anyway. That is the appeal.

A small, sharp 2007 High Grade of the fan-favourite ace custom.

Build difficulty

A short, easy snap-fit build. Parts are moulded in colour, no glue or paint needed, and the part count is low. This is a genuinely good first or second kit, and one of the cheaper ways into Gundam 00. Expect about an hour.

Technical highlights

The Flag is a variable mobile suit, so the kit switches between MS Mode and Flight Position rather than staying locked in one shape. Articulation runs on polycap joints throughout. It is moulded in black with some parts in white, so the ace colour scheme is in the plastic. Weapons are the ones the Union actually fields: a trial-type linear rifle, a sonic blade, and a defence rod. Foil stickers are included for detail.

What to watch for

I went looking for recurring build problems with this specific kit and did not find a repeated, independently confirmed fault. What I did find is a naming trap worth knowing about before you buy, because almost everything written about a "Union Flag" online is about a different kit.

There are three separate releases people mix up: the standard Union Flag, this one which is Graham's black custom, and the later Union Flag Custom II, usually called the GN Flag, which is a P-Bandai release with new moulds. Reviews of the GN Flag do not describe this kit, and the GN Flag does not have a flight mode while this one does. If you are researching before buying, check which one you are reading about.

Builder tips: nub marks show clearly on black plastic, so a sanding stick pass is worth the extra few minutes. Work the transformation slowly the first time rather than forcing a joint. Panel lining on a black kit should be lighter than you think, otherwise it disappears.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife and sanding sticks cover it. Expect around an hour. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

What weapons does it actually come with?

A trial-type linear rifle, a sonic blade and a defence rod, plus a sheet of foil stickers. Worth being clear: the Flag is a Union machine, not a Celestial Being one, so it carries no GN weapons and has no Trans-Am system. That is the whole point of Graham, he goes after Gundams without any of that.

Does it really transform?

Yes. The Flag is a variable mobile suit and the kit switches between MS Mode and Flight Position, using the actual parts rather than swapping in a separate set. Take it slowly the first time and do not force any joint that resists.

How is this different from the standard Union Flag or the GN Flag?

Three different kits get confused constantly. The standard Union Flag is the production model. This one is Graham's personal custom, moulded in black and roughly twice as fast in-universe. The Union Flag Custom II, usually called the GN Flag, is a later P-Bandai release on new moulds and does not have a flight mode, while this one does. Check which you are reading about before you buy.

What colour is it, and do I need to paint it?

Moulded in black with some parts in white, so the ace scheme is already in the plastic and no painting is needed. Foil stickers handle the detail. The only thing worth doing is cleaning up nub marks, since they show clearly against black.

Is this a good kit for a beginner?

It is one of the better cheap entry points. Low part count, snap-fit, no glue or paint, and about an hour of building for a finished kit that transforms. If you want to try a variable mobile suit without committing to a big or expensive build, this is a sensible place to start.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
