Bandai 1/144 HG Stargazer Gundam

The Gundam that was never built to fight

Almost every mobile suit in the Cosmic Era exists to shoot at something. The GSX-401FW Stargazer does not. It was built by a deep space survey organisation to go a very long way from Earth, and its whole design follows from that: a beam shield generator instead of armour, a propulsion system built around light, and a single sidearm that mostly stays holstered. Selene McGriff flies it, and the Stargazer OVA ends up being about the one machine in the setting that just wants to leave.

It is an unusual thing to have on a Gunpla shelf, and that is exactly the appeal.

Build difficulty

A simple 1/144 High Grade. Snap-fit, moulded in colour, no glue and no paint needed, and a low part count. What makes this build different is the stickers. There are two full sheets and they carry a lot of the finished look, so budget more time for sticker application than you would normally spend on a kit this size.

Technical highlights

The beam shield generator backpack is the defining piece. The kit includes three clear green beam rings and a stainless steel rod that holds them in position around the suit, which is how you display the Voiture Lumière effect. What to watch for

This kit divides people, and the honest thing to do is tell you why before you buy rather than after. Every source I looked at agrees on one point: the finished look depends heavily on stickers. Where they disagree is whether that is a problem. One builder rated it among the worst kits they had built, citing the stickers, poor articulation, awkward gate locations and visible seams. A separate builder review took the opposite view and specifically praised the gold stickers as a reflective, slightly holographic material that works well across the body. A third review simply notes the two sticker sets and the rarely-used rifle as the main contents.

So: if you dislike sticker-heavy kits, this is not the one for you. If you do not mind them, the reflective gold set is genuinely good and the beam ring display is unlike anything else at this scale. Articulation is limited either way, which suits a design built for drifting through space rather than fighting in it.

Builder tips: decide gold or black before you start, because mixing the two sets looks muddled. Apply stickers with tweezers and a damp cotton bud so you can nudge them into place. Check gate locations before you cut, since a couple sit on visible surfaces and are worth trimming carefully and sanding back. The steel rod holding the beam rings is easy to lose, so keep it in the box until the end.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required, despite what some older listings for this kit claim. Nippers, a hobby knife, sanding sticks and a pair of tweezers for the stickers cover it. Expect around an hour and a half of assembly plus extra time for sticker work. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need glue or paint for this kit?

No to both. It is a snap-fit High Grade with parts moulded in colour. Some older listings for this kit wrongly list plastic cement as a required tool, which is not correct for any modern Bandai Gunpla. What it does need is time for stickers, because two sheets are included and they carry a lot of the finished look.

What are the beam rings and how do they attach?

Three clear green rings that sit around the suit to represent its propulsion effect. They are held in position by a stainless steel rod included in the box, not a plastic one. Combined with the included display base, that is how you get the signature Stargazer display. Keep the rod in the box until you need it, because it is small and easy to lose.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
