The half of the Dendrobium you can actually put on a shelf

The GP03 "Dendrobium" is one of the largest things in the Universal Century, an orbital weapons platform the size of a building. The RX-78GP03S "Stamen" is the mobile suit that sits inside it and does the actual flying. On its own it is a lean, purposeful Federation Gundam with a claw arm and a folding shield, and it is the version that fits on a normal display shelf without requiring you to rearrange the room.

This is the 2001 Master Grade, and it is a proper gimmick kit. Armour comes off, hatches open, the shield folds and the claw extends.

Build difficulty

A middle-weight Master Grade. Snap-fit, moulded in colour, no glue required, and a comfortable build for anyone who has done an MG before or is stepping up from HG kits with a bit of patience. The one thing to note is that some fits are tight, particularly around the waist, so ease parts together rather than forcing them.

Technical highlights

The armour is removable to expose the skeleton and hydraulics underneath, which is the main reason to build this one in 1/100. The Core Fighter detaches. The rocket packs move and the hatch on top opens to give access to the beam sword. The shield folds up and stores on the arm. The left arm opens and the claw extends outward. You get two hand types, closed fists and posable hands with moving fingers, plus a folding bazooka, beam rifle and beam sabre.

What to watch for

Articulation is the honest limitation here, and two separate points came up when I went looking. A detailed builder review of this kit singles out the waist as barely turning and the legs as unable to split far apart for a dynamic stance. Separately, builder discussion of the MG GP kits as a group notes they carry enough known issues that people keep asking Bandai for Ver 2.0 updates. Both are consistent with the era rather than with a fault in your particular box.

The other thing worth flagging is fit. At least one builder reported cracking parts because of a very tight fit around the waist. If something does not want to go together, stop and check the alignment rather than pushing harder.

Builder tips: test-fit the waist assembly dry before committing and shave a hair off the peg if it is fighting you. Work the claw arm slowly the first time you extend it. The armour-off display is genuinely worth setting up at least once, since the hydraulics underneath are the best-looking part of the kit.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife and sanding sticks cover it. Expect roughly three to five hours across a session or two. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Do I need paint or glue?

No to both. Parts are moulded in colour and the whole thing snaps together. Markings come as stickers. Panel lining the white armour and a light wash on the exposed inner frame are the two things that lift it most if you want to go further, but neither is required.

Anything I should be careful about during the build?

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
