Red Gundam (gMS-α), the pink and red Gundam from GQuuuuuuX
This is the Red Gundam flown by Char Aznable and Shuji Ito in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: the RX-78-02 taken from the Federation, repainted red and fitted with psycommu bits. Bandai released the HG kit on 31 May 2025 with the series' slim, fine-detailed styling, two large bits, a hammer on a bendable chain, a shield and a beam rifle.
It is a dense little kit with a distinctive silhouette, and a good partner for the GQuuuuuuX and White Gundam kits on the same shelf.
Build difficulty
Skill Level 2. Bandai rates it 8+. Builder reviews describe KPS joints through the limbs, with ball-joint polycaps in the torso and shoulder area. The head alone is 12 parts and the kit has many small parts, so work over a tray and keep the spare foil stickers handy. Reviewers found no seam lines to deal with on the arms, legs and rifle, because the joins fall on moulded step-down panel lines.
Technical highlights
The head has a centre section that slides independently of the cheek armour, so it can look almost straight up. The shoulders sit on two ball joints, the elbows and knees are double-jointed and bend deeply, and the torso is built from separate blocks that move front, back and sideways. The legs spread wide because there is no bulky skirt armour. The backpack is styled like a Core Fighter, has a standard two-peg mount, and carries the saber hilts on ball-jointed holders. The crotch has a 3mm hole for a display stand, and the sole carries a hidden RX-78 moulding. The kit comes with one open left hand.
What makes this kit special
-
Two psycommu bits: large, finely detailed bits that mount on the shoulders, forearms or calves with joint parts, or stand alone on a 3mm stand.
-
Hammer on a chain: the chain is pre-assembled, cut from the runner and bends into any shape you like, with a display part for the throwing pose.
-
Shield with three mounts: carry it on the forearm, hang it on the backpack, or hold it by the grip on its back.
-
Colour separation: pink and red moulded colour with dark grey, yellow and a grey shield, in a matte finish. Foil stickers cover the fine yellow lines and sensors.
-
Clear pink beam blades: two fluorescent blades that fit the backpack saber hilts.

What to watch for
Drawing on three detailed Japanese builder reviews and a builder's note on r/freedomisgunpla. Several points below come from a single reviewer and are marked as such:
-
Small parts: the head and body are very finely split, and one reviewer warns the small parts are easy to lose. Spare foil stickers are included for the sensors and eyes.
-
Stickers on raised detail: one reviewer found the green and red wing-tip light stickers go on raised mouldings and can slip. Much of the yellow and orange detailing on the arms and legs is stickers rather than moulded colour.
-
Loose saber hilts: one reviewer found the slim saber hilts can slip out of the hand or from the backpack holders, and suggests a little padding in the hand. The other two reviewers did not mention it.
-
Hammer grip: one reviewer found the thick chain sits the hand armour slightly off the hand, so the hammer can pop out if you hold the chain. Holding it by the grip is steadier.
-
A few missing colours: the bit nozzles, head vulcan and some small details lack colour, and two reviewers recommend partial painting.
-
Two bits only: the kit includes two bits, while the joints can hold six, so a full six-bit setup would need extra kits.
-
More pink than red: a builder on r/freedomisgunpla found it a lot more pink than expected. The runners are pink-based with red on the torso and soles.
-
Some quirks in the joints: one reviewer found the articulation wide but unusual, with some interference to work around when posing.
Build notes
No glue or paint is required, though two reviewers recommend painting a few small areas. Nippers are needed to remove parts from the runners. Recommended age: 8 and over.
