Bandai 1/144 RG ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam
The ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam is Shinn Asuka's mobile suit from the second half of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, ZAFT's answer once the Freedom and Justice were lost, and the successor design to the Freedom's own frame. It carries the Anti-Ship Sword, a full beam weapon loadout, and the gold-toned "Wings of Light" array that defines the silhouette on screen. The Real Grade brings it down to 1/144 scale with Bandai's full RG inner frame and multi-colour moulding.
Bandai rates this kit Skill Level 2, the same easy-to-complete band as most HGs. The Real Grade inner frame arrives pre-articulated, so the range of motion is built in, but it's an older RG tooling (2013) and the joints are noticeably smaller and less forgiving than a modern RG. Take the first few poses slowly.
Technical Highlights
The kit uses Bandai's RG inner frame system with multi-colour runners, so the white, grey, red, blue and gold panels are moulded in their final colours rather than needing paint. The Anti-Ship Sword carries its own inner frame detail, and the beam rifle and shield round out the ranged loadout. No LED, no lighting gimmick, this is a straight articulation-and-weapons RG build.
What Makes This Kit Special
-
Anti-Ship Sword: Destiny's signature melee weapon, styled after the Freedom's own beam sabre but scaled up, with its own internal frame detail.
-
Full ZAFT beam loadout: beam rifle and shield included alongside the sword for a complete ranged-and-melee display.
-
RG multi-colour moulding: the white, red, blue and gold colour separation is done at the runner level, no painting required to get the on-screen look.
-
Multiple hand parts: swap between open palm, weapon grip and fist for different poses without extra tools.
-
RG-scale detail at 1/144: the inner frame treatment gives this small-scale kit a level of mechanical detail HG kits don't carry.

What to Watch For
Reviews of this kit consistently flag the inner frame as looser than later RG tooling, particularly in the shoulders and hips, and note the hand covers can work themselves loose during posing, so a light touch when swapping hand parts helps. One long-form review also felt the Anti-Ship Sword's beam effect part reads thin next to other kits' beam effects, worth knowing if the sword is going to be the display centrepiece. None of this is unusual for a 2013-tooled RG and it doesn't affect the snap-fit build itself, it's a posing-care note rather than a build-blocking issue.
Builder Tips: Test the shoulder and hip joints gently before committing to a display pose, and keep spare cement on hand in case a hand cover does pop loose during use, most builders find a small dab is enough to firm it back up without affecting the swap-in, swap-out hand parts.
Build Notes
Snap-fit assembly. No glue required for the build itself, though see the note above on hand covers. Standard Gunpla tools (nippers, hobby knife) are enough to get through this kit. No paint required to match the on-screen look. Expect a 4-6 hour build. Action Base sold separately. Recommended age 15+.
