Bandai 1/100 MG MSM-07 Z'Gok

The one that comes out of the water

The MSM-07 Z'Gok is Zeon's amphibious answer to a war that had moved to Earth, and it is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the whole franchise. Round shoulders, a mono-eye that sweeps, and those claws. It is not elegant and it was never meant to be. It was meant to come up out of the sea somewhere the Federation was not expecting it.

This is the mass production version in Master Grade, and Bandai took the retro shape seriously while building a genuinely modern frame underneath it.

Build difficulty

Seven runners of injection plastic, two of ABS for the joints, and one tree of rubber parts that cover the inner joints. It is snap-fit, moulded in colour and no glue is needed. That is a modest part count for a Master Grade, which makes this a friendly one to start with if you are moving up from HG kits. Nothing about it is fiddly.

Technical highlights

The inner frame is the clever bit. It is engineered so the finished kit has the same flexibility in the arms and legs that the Z'Gok showed in the series, so the famous kneeling pose off the box art drops straight into place without a fight and without armour popping off when you move it. The rubber parts cover the inner joints, which keeps the mechanical detail hidden the way the design intends. Markings come as both stickers and dry transfers.

What to watch for

I went looking for recurring build problems and did not find a repeated, independently confirmed fault with this kit. The general verdict in builder discussion is positive, with one reviewer describing it as a very solid kit that still holds up after eighteen years, while adding the caveat that the joints can wear down over time. That is a fair thing to know about a design that carries a lot of weight in round shoulder and arm assemblies.

Worth being clear that this is the plain mass production Z'Gok in green. It is a different kit from Char's red MSM-07S version, and the two are easy to mix up when you are shopping.

Builder tips: take it slow on the rubber joint covers, since they stretch into place and a nick from a hobby knife will show. If a joint does loosen after a lot of handling, a thin coat of clear nail polish on the peg, left to dry fully, brings the friction back. Panel lining the shoulder domes is the single change that most sharpens the finished look.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife and sanding sticks are enough. Expect around three hours. Dry transfers need an even rub with a blunt tool and do not reposition once down, so line each one up first. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the green one or Char's red one?

This is the plain green mass production MSM-07. Char's version is the MSM-07S, which is red and a separate kit. They are easy to mix up when you are shopping, so it is worth checking the S. We stock the Char Custom too, and the two of them side by side make a strong pair on the shelf.

Can it actually do the kneeling pose from the box art?

Yes, easily. That is specifically what the inner frame was engineered for. The pose drops in without struggling against uncooperative parts and without armour falling off when you reposition it, which was not a given on kits of this era.

Is a Master Grade too big a jump if I've only built HGs?

Not this one. Seven runners of plastic plus two ABS runners and a rubber tree is a modest count for a Master Grade, and nothing in the assembly is fiddly. It is snap-fit with no glue, so the skills are the same as an HG, there is just more of it. Around three hours is a realistic estimate.

What are the rubber parts for?

They cover the inner joints. The kit includes a dedicated tree of rubber parts that stretch over the joint areas so the mechanical detail stays hidden and the outside keeps the smooth, rounded look the Z'Gok is meant to have. Take your time fitting them, because a nick from a hobby knife will show.

Does it need paint, and what's included for markings?

No paint needed. Parts are moulded in colour and the kit snaps together. You get both a sticker sheet and a dry transfer sheet for markings, so you can pick whichever you prefer. Dry transfers look better but do not reposition once they are down, so line each one up before you rub it.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
