The kit people still hold up as the benchmark
The MS-06J is the ground-type Zaku II, the green one, and it is the mobile suit that most people picture when they picture Zeon at all. Mass produced, unglamorous and everywhere. Bandai had already made several Master Grade Zakus before this one, and then a decade after the first they went back and rebuilt it from the inner frame out.
Nearly twenty years later, builders still bring this kit up when the conversation turns to which Master Grade is the best one. That is not a marketing line, it is what the discussion actually looks like.
Build difficulty
A properly engineered Master Grade, and a genuinely enjoyable one. Snap-fit, moulded in colour, no glue or paint needed. The inner frame is the star and it goes together cleanly. Most builders find it a satisfying rather than a difficult build, though it is a real Master Grade and not a quick evening. Comfortable for anyone who has done an MG before, and a reasonable first one if you are patient.
Technical highlights
The Ver. 2.0 update was a complete inner frame rebuild for a wider range of motion and more realistic movement, to the point you can pose it kneeling on one leg the way it does in the show. The other headline is manufacturing: the power pipes use a moulding process that forms two different sections together for easy slide assembly, which was new at the time and still reads well. Two blade antenna types are included so you can build a commander unit, and two 1/100-scale pilot figures come in the box.

What to watch for
This is the rare case where the search turned up almost nothing to warn you about. Across several separate builder discussions the verdict is consistently strong: one thread argues it is the best Master Grade full stop, noting that despite its age it needs no upgrades to the inner frame or build process, and another calls it still top tier after more than fifteen years. The only recurring criticism in that second discussion is that many of the panel lines are shallow and benefit from being deepened.
The one dissenting note worth passing on is a builder who found Ver. 2.0 kits a nightmare to build while still describing the result as rewarding. That is a minority view against a lot of praise, but it is fair to say the frame assembly rewards patience.
Builder tips: deepen the shallow panel lines with a scriber before you line them, since that is the single most common suggestion from people who have built it. Take the power pipes slowly and let the slide assembly do the work rather than forcing them. The two pilot figures are tiny and worth a careful hand-paint if you want the scale to land.
Build notes
No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife and sanding sticks cover it, plus a panel liner and ideally a scriber. Expect three to five hours. Recommended age 15 and over.
