Bandai 1/144 HGIBO Gundam Bael

Bandai 1/144 HGIBO Gundam Bael

The Bandai 1/144 HGIBO Gundam Bael is a High Grade model kit of the legendary first Gundam Frame from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, piloted by McGillis Fareed. This kit captures Bael's white and blue armour and twin sword combat style that made it the symbol of Gjallarhorn's founding. As ASW-G-01, Bael holds the distinction of being the first of the 72 Gundam Frames built during the Calamity War, and its appearance in Season 2 represents McGillis's claim to lead Gjallarhorn itself.

This kit includes 200+ parts with snap-fit assembly and clean colour separation. The HGIBO Gundam Bael features dual gold-bladed Bael Swords for recreating the high-speed twin blade combat style that defines this mobile suit's fighting technique.

The kit uses the HGIBO inner frame system that provides solid articulation for sword-wielding poses and aerial combat stances. Colour separation is handled through white, blue and grey plastic runners, with the twin swords moulded in gold, so the kit reads correctly straight off the runner without paint. Best suited for intermediate builders who want the legendary first Gundam Frame in their Iron-Blooded Orphans collection.

What Makes This Kit Special

  • First Gundam Frame: ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael, the original and most legendary of the 72 Gundam Frames from the Calamity War era

  • White and Blue Armour: Clean white and blue colour scheme that represents Bael's status as Gjallarhorn's symbol
  • HGIBO Inner Frame: Solid shoulder and hip articulation for dynamic sword combat stances
  • Articulated Wing Binders: Distinctive back-mounted wing units move independently for high-mobility poses
  • Clean Colour Separation: The white and blue armour is moulded in, with foil stickers available for sensor detail
  • Action Base Compatible: Standard connection points for displaying Bael in flight with a separately sold Action Base stand

Perfect For

This kit suits Iron-Blooded Orphans collectors who want the legendary first Gundam Frame that started it all. Intermediate builders will appreciate the clean white and blue colour scheme and twin sword setup that makes posing straightforward and dramatic. Fans of dual-wielding mobile suits and clean white colour schemes will find Bael's design particularly appealing. Not recommended for first-time builders due to the number of small white parts that require careful nub removal to maintain the clean appearance.

What to Watch For

A general web search plus a targeted Reddit and YouTube sweep found no dedicated build reviews yet for this specific HG kit. The reviews that do exist online cover the larger 1/100 Full Mechanics Gundam Bael, a different grade with a different part breakdown, so they aren't included here as evidence for this HG kit. Genuinely thin coverage at time of writing, stated as such rather than guessed at.

Build Notes

This is a snap-fit plastic model kit that requires no glue for assembly. Nippers recommended for removing parts from runners, especially important for white parts to avoid visible stress marks. Panel lining will enhance the surface details. Action Base display stand sold separately for aerial sword combat poses.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
