Series Assembly Guide FAQ

Bandai 1/100 MG XXXG-01W Wing Gundam EW Ver.

Heero Yuy's Wing Gundam in its Endless Waltz form, in MG 1/100

The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam is Heero Yuy's mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, and this Master Grade kit is the EW version, the Endless Waltz look designed by Hajime Katoki. Bandai's own page for the EW kit lists a March 2011 release. It transforms into bird mode and carries a long buster rifle, shield and beam saber.

It suits Gundam Wing fans, MG collectors who like a classic transformable kit, and anyone who wants the Endless Waltz Wing in the box colours.

Build difficulty

Bandai rates it 15 and over. It has over 260 pieces on 13 runners plus polycaps, everything moulded in colour and snap-fit, with no paint needed. A reviewer who built the same mould noted a lot of decals and stickers, which is where first-timers tend to slip. Treat it as an intermediate Master Grade, with nippers, a hobby knife and fine sanding sticks.

Technical highlights

This EW version adds Action Base compatible parts for posing, and the markings are a new design by Hajime Katoki. Compared with the earlier Ver.Ka release, the colour shades differ slightly and there are fewer markings. The wings fold back and the kit converts to bird mode. The colour scheme is white, blue, red and yellow.

What makes this kit special

  • Endless Waltz design: the EW look, drawn by Hajime Katoki.
  • Bird mode: converts from mobile suit to bird mode, as the press images show.
  • Action Base ready: added connection parts for display on an Action Base.
  • Buster rifle and shield: the long buster rifle and shield are part of the kit.
  • Katoki markings: new design markings plus foil seals.
  • Master Grade detail: over 260 pieces on 13 runners plus polycaps.

What's in the box

  • Moulded runners (14 sets, per Bandai)
  • Foil seal (1)
  • Marking seal (1)
  • Gundam decal (1)
  • Assembly manual (1)

Weapons shown in the press images are the buster rifle, shield and a beam saber. No display base is included.

Compatible accessories

Bandai says Action Base compatible parts were added to this edition, and its press images show the kit on a base. For 1/100 kits, the standard stand is Action Base 4.

What to watch for

This kit is described as the same mould as the earlier Ver.Ka release apart from colour shades and markings, so these notes come from a review of the Ver.Ka kit.

  • Heavy buster rifle: the reviewer found the rifle heavy enough to sag and needing two hands.
  • Loose arms: that reviewer's arms slowly sagged when carrying the rifle or shield out straight.
  • Elbow clearance and kneeling: the shoulder pads partly block elbow bend, and the foot design makes kneeling difficult.
  • Lots of decals: the reviewer found the number of decals and stickers a lot for a first MG.

Builder tips: take your time with the decals, and test how the rifle sits before posing.

Build notes

Nippers and a hobby knife for clean-up, no paint required. Recommended age 15 and over per Bandai.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
