Bandai 30MF Class Up Armour (Liber Paladin)

Take the Liber Knight up to Class III

This is the Class Up Armor (Liber Paladin) set for the 30 Minutes Fantasy line, marked A-02 on the box. It is an armour and weapon set, not a figure. Bandai designed it to be fitted to the Liber Knight (sold separately) so that the Class I Knight becomes a Class III Paladin through an "Armor Cross" armour exchange. Bandai describes the Paladin job as one with stronger sword skills than a knight and higher physical defence, and says the face and colouring differ from the Rosan Empire's Paladin set.

Build difficulty

Skill Level 2. It is rated 15+ by Bandai and one video reviewer built it as a snap-fit sample, with three runners and about 15 additional parts per one Japanese reviewer. Most pieces clip over the Liber Knight's existing armour. A few swaps are needed, including moving the blue joint to the new rear waist armour, replacing the shoulder armour's top part and swapping the head's visor and mask, per another reviewer. One reviewer notes no major strip-down of the base figure is needed.

Technical highlights

  • Moulded in a darker grey than the Liber Knight, so the added parts are easy to spot, with gold accent parts in a metallic-look plastic that is not plated, per two Japanese reviewers.
  • Head visor and mask swap gives the Paladin an inverted triangle silhouette, per one reviewer.
  • Shoulder and skirt armour sit on joints that can swing to the back, which keeps the arms free, per one reviewer. Another notes the armour stays on when posed.
  • A larger blade part clips onto the Liber Knight's sword, making it longer and thicker. The grip is unchanged, so a two-handed hold still works.
  • The Liber Knight's shield mounts at the waist as part of the skirt armour.
  • Detail is moulded on the inside of the skirt armour too, which shows when the panels are opened.

What makes this kit special

  • Class III upgrade: new chest, shoulder, waist, wrist and shin armour plus a bigger sword in one pack.
  • Clip-on fitting: built for the Liber Knight, so it goes on without a heavy strip-down, per one reviewer.
  • Gold accents: metallic-look gold details lift the dark grey armour.
  • Spare-parts value: one reviewer expects the shoulder and skirt armour to work as custom parts on kits outside 30MF.

What's in the box

  • Armour parts, one set (Bandai)
  • Weapon parts, one set (Bandai), including the large blade part
  • Three runners, per one reviewer

Not included: the Liber Knight base figure, the Liber Knight's sword and shield, and stickers. Everything except the Class Up Armor is sold separately, as the box states.

Compatible kits

Officially, this set is for the Bandai 30MF Liber Knight, which Bandai says combines with it to make the Liber Paladin. The set reuses the Liber Knight's sword and shield, so you need those parts too. One reviewer fitted the armour to another 30 Minutes Sisters body, where the parts fit but the head visor sat too high, so treat other bodies as a custom job. A second class-up set for the Liber Knight is the Bandai 30MF Class Up Armour (Liber Holy Knight). One reviewer notes that the two class-up sets cannot be worn at the same time, so a second body is needed to use both.

What to watch for

Drawing on three Japanese-language builder reviews. Treat the single-reviewer points as notes rather than confirmed faults:

  • You need a Liber Knight to use it, and the Knight is not in this pack.
  • The waist armour trims the hip and leg range somewhat, per one reviewer. Another found the sharp chest armour interferes when bending forward, and a third found the loss of movement smaller than expected.
  • Taking the Liber Knight shield off the waist to hold it can foul the added armour, so the armour needs rotating into place, per one reviewer.
  • The twin eyes on the Paladin head look dark and do not read as clear parts, and the gold parts show weld lines, per one reviewer.
  • The shield only moves to the waist and gets no new parts, which one reviewer found underwhelming.

The reviews are positive on the added volume, the armour detail and the larger sword, and report that the armour stays on when posed.

Build notes

One reviewer's sample build was titled snap-fit, and none of the reviews mention cement. Paint and panel lining are optional, since the colours are moulded in. One reviewer notes the edges are sharp because the set is rated 15+ with no safety tips. Rated 15 and up by Bandai.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Liber Knight to use it?

Yes. Bandai says the set combines with the separately sold Liber Knight to make the Liber Paladin, and the pack contains only armour parts and weapon parts. The Liber Knight's own sword and shield are reused.

Will it fit other 30 Minutes figures?

It is made for the Liber Knight. One reviewer fitted the armour to a 30MS body and found the parts fit, but the head visor sat too high, so other bodies are a custom job.

What's in the pack?

Per Bandai, one set of armour parts and one set of weapon parts, which includes the larger sword blade. One reviewer counts three runners and about 15 additional parts.

Does it need glue or paint?

A video reviewer titled their sample build as snap-fit, and none of the reviews mention cement. The parts are moulded in colour with metallic-look gold, so paint is optional. It is rated 15+ by Bandai.

Does the heavier armour limit posing?

Slightly. One reviewer says the waist armour reduces the range of the legs somewhat and another says the pointed chest armour gets in the way when bending forward, but a third found it less restrictive than expected and the armour stayed on when posed.
