Bandai 1/100 MGSD Freedom Gundam

Master Grade engineering, SD proportions

The MGSD Freedom Gundam is the opening kit in Bandai's Master Grade SD line, built for Kira Yamato's signature mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Standing 115mm tall, it packs a full internal frame with the articulation and finish quality of a Master Grade kit into a compact SD-proportioned body, rather than treating the SD format as a simplified shortcut.

A strong pick for a Gundam SEED fan who wants Freedom Gundam's full loadout on the shelf without committing to a full-size MG.

Build difficulty

Bandai rates this Skill Level 2 on the box, easy to complete. No cement and no painting are required to finish the kit. Parts are cut from the runners and cleaned up in the standard way, but nothing beyond that. A comfortable step up from a straightforward HG without the demands of a full MG.

Technical highlights

The internal frame carries the same movable-joint engineering as Bandai's full-size MG line, scaled down rather than simplified. The main camera and twin eyes use a double-layered clear-part construction, and Real Metallic Gloss Injection parts give the armour a genuine metallic sheen without needing paint. A Reflection Cut mechanism sits behind the clear wing binder parts, and the external armour uses a 2-tone colour moulding for sharper panel definition. The head carries three-axis movement for chin-tuck and head-forward poses, and the hip joints use a slide mechanism for a wider leg range.

What Makes This Kit Special

  • Master Grade internals at SD scale: a genuine internal frame with MG-level articulation, not a simplified SD skeleton.
  • Real Metallic Gloss Injection: armour parts carry a metallic finish straight from the mould, no paint required.
  • Double-layered clear eyes: the main camera and twin eyes use layered clear parts for depth rather than a single flat lens.
  • Reflection Cut wing binders: a reflective mechanism sits behind the clear wing binder parts for extra shine.
  • 2-tone armour moulding: sharper colour separation on the external armour without painting.
  • Three-axis head and hip slide: genuine MG-style articulation range in a 115mm body.

What's In The Box

  • Freedom Gundam plastic runners (2-tone moulded armour, Real Metallic Gloss Injection parts)
  • Pre-engineered internal frame
  • Beam Rifle

Compatible Accessories

This is a 1/100-comparable SD-scale kit at 115mm tall. Check the Bandai instruction manual for the exact peg size before pairing with a display stand, since MGSD kits use their own scale rather than standard 1/100 or 1/144 mounts.

What to Watch For

A general web sweep found consistent praise for how the MGSD line captures MG-style articulation in a smaller body, without a specific structural fault reported for this Freedom Gundam release across the sources checked. Coverage is genuinely positive rather than thin, but still below the 3-source threshold for a stated product-wide finding, so this is noted as consistent early feedback rather than a confirmed pattern.

Builder Tips: The Real Metallic Gloss Injection parts finish straight from the runner, so there's no need to add a metallic topcoat unless you specifically want to push the shine further. Handle the clear wing binder parts carefully during assembly to avoid scuffing the Reflection Cut backing.

Build Notes

No cement or paint required. Nippers and a hobby knife cover the tool requirements, with sanding sticks handy for gate clean-up. A comfortable single-session build. Recommended age 15+.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, it carries a genuine internal frame with MG-level movable joints, just scaled down to a 115mm SD body rather than 1/100 scale.

What weapons come with the kit?

A Beam Rifle, a Beam Shield, and two Beam Saber blades, plus a marking sticker sheet.
