What to watch for

Translucent plastic shows nub marks more clearly than solid plastic. A quick pass with a fine file on each gate cut keeps the finish clean. The kit ships with a small sticker sheet rather than waterslide decals. Stickers apply straightforward but cannot be repositioned cleanly once placed. The included snacks have an expiry date printed on the bag, so eat them, don't display them.

Build notes

Working through the legs and torso first lets you check the joint tension before adding accessories. The clear V-fin on the head is the most likely part to flex during removal, so cut it carefully.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really clear like crystal?

Yes, the plastic is genuinely translucent across the whole kit, not just on accent parts. Light passes through the body and accessories so the beam saber and inner detail read more clearly than they do in solid colour. Direct light gives the strongest effect.

Is it easy to build, even for beginners?

Yes. The SDEX line is snap-fit with pre-coloured plastic. No glue, no paint, no advanced tools. A pair of nippers and a fine file for nub clean-up is enough. First-build territory for many people in our Brisbane Build Group.

Can I pose it in different ways?

Yes. The SD format gives the standard chibi pose range, including beam saber stances, action poses, and neutral standing. Articulation is solid for the format but not at HG kit level. The included stand helps with dynamic poses.

What about weapons? Does it just have the beam saber?

Just the beam saber. SDEX kits are not part-compatible with Bandai's separate option parts and weapon set lines, so this kit comes with what's in the box. The clear plastic on the beam saber is the visual highlight.

Is it just for display, or can I actually play with it?

Both works. The snap-fit joints are sturdy enough for handling without breaking, and the clear plastic resists scratches reasonably well. For long-term display, keep it out of direct sun. Translucent plastic can yellow over years of UV exposure.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
