Bandai SD Sangoku Soketsuden Lu Bu Sinanju & Red Hare

Lu Bu Fengxian rides again as the Sinanju

Lu Bu Fengxian is one of the biggest names in Chinese history: the most feared warrior of the late Han dynasty, never seen without his legendary horse, Red Hare. Bandai's SD Gundam World Sangoku Soketsuden line reimagines him through the silhouette of the Universal Century's MSN-06S Sinanju, the mobile suit tied to Neo Zeon's Full Frontal, rebuilt here in full chibi proportions with the Sinanju's signature red, black and gold colour scheme intact.

It's a kit for anyone who likes a bit of crossover fun in their Gunpla. Sinanju fans get a playful new take on a suit they already love, Three Kingdoms fans get their favourite warlord in mecha form, and if you're after a quick, satisfying SD build with a genuine gimmick, this one has two: a shape-changing weapon and a separate motorcycle mount.

Build difficulty

Rated Skill Level 1 by the manufacturer and recommended for builders aged 8 and up, this is one of the more approachable kits in the SD range. Parts are moulded in colour, assembly is fully snap-fit, and no cement or paint is needed to get the finished look. Across around 7 runners you're building two things, the Lu Bu Sinanju figure and the separate Red Hare unit, so it takes a little longer than the simplest single-figure SD kits, but it's still a same-afternoon build for a first-timer and a quick one for anyone with a few kits behind them.

Technical highlights

The headline feature is the four-piece clear weapon set: combine it into a single long halberd for a dramatic silhouette, or split it back into a pair of shorter blades. Full-colour part separation means the red, black and gold Sinanju scheme is moulded in, not painted on, and a foil seal sheet adds fine gold trim detail. Red Hare builds as its own posable unit rather than a static accessory.

What makes this kit special

  • Combinable weapon system: four clear-part swords reconfigure between a full halberd and twin blades, so you can switch the display without extra parts.
  • A genuine mount, not a static accessory: Red Hare builds as its own posable motorcycle-style unit that Lu Bu Sinanju can ride.
  • Sinanju's colour scheme, chibi-sized: the red, black and gold look of the Universal Century original carries straight through to SD proportions.
  • Full-colour moulded parts: no painting required to get the finished look right off the runner.
  • Foil seal accents: fine gold detailing without decal work.
  • Crossover appeal: works as a Sinanju piece, a Three Kingdoms piece, or just a fun standalone SD build.

What to watch for

One independent builder review flagged some part-on-part collision during posing, most noticeably around the side skirt armour, which can limit certain leg poses. We haven't found this repeated across multiple independent sources, so treat it as a single data point rather than a confirmed pattern.

Builder tip: test-fit the skirt armour and weapon arms in your intended pose before final assembly, and go slowly on tight-fitting joints. SD kits pack a lot of parts into a small frame.

Build notes

No cement or paint required for this kit. Basic tools (nippers and a hobby knife) are enough, though sanding sticks help clean up nub marks for a tidier finish. Recommended for builders aged 8 and up.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.1. Most adults & children can assemble Skill Level 1 kits with little to no difficulty. Very basic hobby tools are recommended including a pair of nippers, a hobby knife, but are not essential. No Glue is needed for these kits. Kits are all snap together build and most parts can be removed by twisting and pushing without the need to snip with nippers.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the real Universal Century Sinanju, or a different design?

It's Bandai's SD Gundam World Sangoku Soketsuden take, an SD reimagining of the Universal Century's MSN-06S Sinanju, restyled as Lu Bu Fengxian from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with the same red, black and gold colour scheme.

Does it come with a display stand?

No display base is included. It pairs with the Bandai Action Base 1, which fits most SD-scale Gundam kits.

Do I need glue or paint?

No. Parts are moulded in colour and the kit is snap-fit, no cement or paint required.

What comes with Red Hare?

Red Hare is a separate motorcycle-style unit that builds alongside Lu Bu Sinanju, plus a four-piece clear weapon set that reconfigures between a halberd and twin blades, and a foil seal sheet.

Is this a good first kit?

Yes. It's rated Skill Level 1 by the manufacturer, suited to first-time builders, though building both the figure and the separate Red Hare unit gives it a bit more to do than the simplest single-figure SD kits.
