Bandai 1/144 HG Immortal Justice Gundam

Shinn Asuka's red Justice, built for big wings and fast poses

The Immortal Justice Gundam is the COMPASS mobile suit flown by Shinn Asuka in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. It carries the Justice name but has its own look: a red-dominant body, a large pair of wing units on the back, and the long beam cutting legs inherited from the Infinite Justice.

This is a 1/144 High Grade kit built on the SEED Action System frame, so it is made to be posed, not just displayed.

Build difficulty

The box is marked for ages 8 and over and the kit snaps together with no glue and no paint, at Skill Level 2 on our scale. Colour separation is good, so most builders only need nippers and a little clean-up. The wing parts have some heavier gate marks, so take your time cutting those. Allow an evening.

Technical highlights

The SEED Action System gives a deeper neck, a double-jointed shoulder, a new torso joint and hip joints that slide independently, so the legs have room to kick and pose. The kit changes into its MA (mobile armour) mode by swapping some parts. The wings are on double joints and the rear thrusters rotate. The shield opens out, takes clear effect parts, and the boomerangs on the hip armour can take effect parts too. The beam cutting legs come with clear effect parts that fit from knee to toe.

What makes this kit special

  • SEED Action System: a joint layout built for dynamic, series-style poses.
  • MA mode: converts by replacing some parts, with the shield and rifle mounted underneath.
  • Combined shield: an attack and defence shield that opens out and takes clear effect parts.
  • Beam cutting legs: clear effect parts reproduce the beam cutter from knee to toe.
  • Sliding hip joints: the hip connecting shafts move independently for bolder leg poses.
  • Moulded in colour: a satisfying finish from assembly alone, with stickers for fine details.

What to watch for

Reviews of this kit are positive on build quality and articulation. Two points came up in the reviews we read.

  • Wing gates: one reviewer found some gate positions on the wing parts needed heavier clean-up and careful cutting.
  • Wing look: one builder found the wing design looks awkward if extended too far outwards and added an extra joint of their own.

Builder tip: cut the wing parts slowly and leave a little extra at the gate, then trim it back with a sharp blade.

Build notes

No glue or paint is needed. Nippers, a hobby knife and a file cover the build. Allow an evening. Recommended age 8 and over.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this kit suitable for beginners?

The box is marked for ages 8 and over and it is snap-fit with no glue or paint, so a first-time builder can manage it. The wing parts have some heavier gates, so cut them slowly.
