The GN-001 Gundam Exia is Setsuna F. Seiei's close-combat Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam 00 — the lead Celestial Being unit through the first season, designed around seven GN-particle blade weapons and built for surgical melee strikes against modern armed-intervention targets. The Real Grade release brings the Exia down to 1/144 scale with the full RG inner frame treatment, the kit detail and articulation that made Bandai's RG line famous.

If you build Real Grade kits, the Exia is one of the highest-rated RGs in the lineup and the natural pair to the RG 00 Raiser for a Celestial Being shelf.

Bandai rates this kit Skill Level 2, the same easy-to-complete band as most HGs, and it uses snap-fit assembly with the Advanced MS Joint pre-built inner frame. The frame arrives pre-articulated, so there's no assembly required for the range of motion itself, but the joints are small and worth working gently on your first few poses.

The Exia RG uses the full Advanced MS Joint frame, which arrives pre-articulated straight off the runner and provides the kit's range of motion. Bandai engineered the GN Drive as a detachable unit, the GN Cord with the texture and detail of an actual plasma-tube array, and the GN Condenser with clear parts and realistic decals to recreate the look of polished metal. What to Watch For

Two things come up repeatedly in builder reviews: the leg connections and the GN cables. More than one builder has flagged the leg joints as needing a bit of care, and separately, more than one has called the GN cables fiddly to seat properly on first assembly, though everyone who pushed through says the result looks the part once it's in. The Advanced MS Joint frame is pre-articulated but the small joint points can snap if forced, so work joints gently on the first move. Realistic decals are delicate, use tweezers and a damp cloth, not your fingers. Avoid panel lining the realistic decal surface directly, the marker can stain the decal film. One reviewer also noted the included GN Sword's beam effect part feels thin compared with some other kits' beam effects, worth knowing if that's a display priority for you.

Builder Tips: Apply the realistic decals before applying any topcoat. A satin or matte topcoat once decals are sealed gives the Exia a uniform finish across the bare plastic, decal, and clear parts. The GN Sword in rifle mode benefits from extra care on the pivot, it's a small point of high stress during transformation.

Build Notes

Snap-fit assembly. No glue required. Sharp nippers (Bandai Spirits or God Hand single-edge recommended) and a hobby knife are needed for clean small-part removal. Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the RG or the MG Exia? I don't want to order the wrong one.

This is the Real Grade, 1/144 scale, smaller and more budget-friendly than the 1/100 MG. Check the SKU (5061600) and barcode (4573102616005) against your order if you've got both grades in your cart.

How hard is this one actually? I've only built a couple of HGs.

Bandai rates it Skill Level 2, the same easy-to-complete rating as most HGs, so you're not out of your depth. The one thing that trips up first-time RG builders is the Advanced MS Joint inner frame: the joints are small and pre-articulated, so work them gently on the first few moves rather than forcing a pose.

Do I need to buy paint or glue before this turns up?

No, it's snap-fit with no cement needed and the colour separation is done at the runner level, so you can build it straight out of the box. Paint and panel lining are optional if you want to push the finish further.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
