Bandai 1/144 HGUC RX-105 XI Gundam

Bandai 1/144 HGUC RX-105 Xi Gundam

The Bandai 1/144 HGUC RX-105 Xi Gundam is the High Grade kit of Mafty Navue Erin's mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash — a large-scale, Minovsky-flight-capable Gundam that represents the anti-Federation insurgency's most advanced weapon. The Xi Gundam is the direct counterpart to the Federation's RX-104FF Penelope, and at 1,280g it carries the same commanding shelf presence as its rival. Released alongside the Penelope as part of Bandai's 40th anniversary Gunpla celebration, this is the kit that completes the central conflict of Hathaway's Flash at 1/144 scale.

The Xi Gundam transforms between mobile suit form and flight form, with the Minovsky flight unit's wings and leg blades reconfiguring for atmospheric combat. The shield attaches by displacing the arm's hexagonal parts, and robust joint components throughout the build deliver stable posing in both configurations.

This kit is best suited to intermediate builders comfortable with larger, more complex HGUC builds. The transformation mechanism and part count make it a more involved build than a standard HG kit, but the snap-fit system keeps it accessible without glue. The Xi Gundam pairs directly with the HGUC Penelope for a complete Hathaway's Flash display, and both kits are built to the same scale for a matched confrontation pose.

What Makes This Kit Special

  • MS Form to Flight Form Transformation: The Xi Gundam transforms between mobile suit and flight configurations, with the Minovsky flight unit wings and leg blades reconfiguring for each mode — two distinct display options in a single kit.
  • Minovsky Flight Unit: The deployable Minovsky flight unit is the Xi Gundam's signature system, enabling atmospheric flight without a support craft. The wing deployment mechanism is faithfully recreated in the kit.
  • Commanding Scale and Presence: At 1,280g, the Xi Gundam is one of the largest and most imposing kits in the HGUC line, with a silhouette that dominates any shelf it's placed on.
  • Robust Joint Engineering: High-quality joint components throughout the build deliver stable posing in both MS and flight form, including dynamic action poses with the large wing units extended.
  • Full Weapon Loadout: Beam rifle, beam saber, and shield included — the Xi Gundam's complete standard armament from Hathaway's Flash.
  • Hexagonal Shield Attachment: The shield attaches by displacing the arm's hexagonal parts, a design detail faithful to the Xi Gundam's engineering as depicted in the film.
  • Leg Blade Detail: The distinctive blades positioned on the Xi Gundam's legs are accurately reproduced, adding to the kit's visual complexity and screen accuracy.
  • Natural Penelope Counterpart: Released alongside the HGUC Penelope as matched kits — both at 1,280g and 1/144 scale, designed to display together as the central conflict of Hathaway's Flash.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
