The God of Death Returns to the Battlefield
The XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe is Duo Maxwell's mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, the stealth, melee-focused unit nicknamed the God of Death by the OZ pilots unfortunate enough to encounter it. The HGAC release brings the original Operation Meteor Gundam back with modern High Grade engineering, restoring the proportions and articulation that the 1995 kits never had.
If you build Gundam Wing kits, the HGAC line is the definitive 1/144 take on the Operation Meteor five, and the Deathscythe is the standout for builders who want active melee posing.
Build difficulty
This kit is designed for intermediate builders and uses snap-fit assembly with no glue or cement required. HLJ's own listing rates it Skill Level 2, matching the Assembly Points badge on this page.
Technical highlights
The HGAC Deathscythe has the full articulation range needed for active scythe poses, which is the main attraction here. Bandai included two versions of the beam scythe effect parts (open and closed) plus a stowed scythe variant, so you can display it in the long-range cloak mode or fully in combat. The buster shield blades move outward and inward, and clear effect parts are included for the active deployment pose. Colour separation handles the black, white, and gold scheme through the runners with no paint required.
What Makes This Kit Special
-
Two Beam Scythe Effect Parts: Open and closed effect blades for varied melee poses
-
Stowed Scythe Variant: Recreate the cloaked stealth mode with the scythe in storage configuration
-
Buster Shield with Active Blades: Shield blades move outward and inward, with optional clear effect parts for active deployment
-
Modern HGAC Articulation: Full range of motion for active melee posing, a major step up from the 1995 original
-
Operation Meteor Five: Pairs with the rest of the HGAC line (Wing, Sandrock, Heavyarms, Shenlong) for the complete set
-
GunPla 40th Anniversary Release: Part of Bandai's 40th anniversary lineup with refreshed tooling

What to Watch For
The active beam scythe effect part is large and shifts the kit's centre of gravity sharply to one side. An Action Base is genuinely useful for held-overhead or wide swing poses. The buster shield's movable blades can fall off the shoulder mount during posing if pushed hard. A touch of friction-restoring nail polish on the peg helps if it works loose.
Builder Tips: Black panel lining on the white chest and gold accents brings out the angular HGAC detailing. The scythe blade benefits from a slightly tinted topcoat or marker shading along the edge to break up the flat clear plastic.
Build Notes
Snap-fit assembly. No glue or cement required. Nippers recommended for clean part removal of the smaller effect parts. Expect a 3-hour build with effect-part swapping. Action Base sold separately and recommended for active scythe poses. Recommended age 15+ (no specific age rating published for this SKU).
