Bandai 1/144 HG Murasame Kai (Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom)

The Compass deployment of Orb's transformable mass-production mech, the SEED Freedom Murasame Kai

The STTS/F-400 Murasame Kai is the upgraded version of Orb Union's transformable mass-production mobile suit, fielded under the Compass banner in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. Multiple Murasame Kai units played major roles in the 2024 film, deployed by Compass as the joint multinational task force's transformable interceptor.

The kit gives Cosmic Era collectors the Compass mass-production grunt, with a parts-swap MA form gimmick that delivers a clean silhouette in both configurations.

Build difficulty

HG 1/144 snap-fit. Bandai rate it age 8 and over. Mecha Express tags it both beginner and intermediate. The MA-form parts swap adds time and a second display configuration without adding difficulty. Expect 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace for a clean snap. No glue. No paint required.

Technical highlights

The headline is the parts-swap MA form. Rather than a working transformation, Bandai designed dedicated exchangeable parts that lock together to recreate the MA form's silhouette beautifully, prioritising the clean look of each mode over a fiddly mechanism. The Beam Rifle's foregrip retracts and deploys, and the rifle connects to the main wing when the kit is in MA form. Drop tank parts attach to extend the loadout. The whole kit is designed for squad building, with multiple units intended to be collected and posed in formation. Colour-moulded parts handle the Compass green-grey-white scheme without paint.

What makes this kit special

  • Parts-swap MA form. Dedicated exchangeable parts recreate the MA configuration's silhouette beautifully, two distinct displayable modes from one kit.
  • Retractable Beam Rifle foregrip. The rifle's foregrip deploys for two-handed firing poses, retracts for a clean stored profile.
  • Wing-mounted rifle in MA form. The Beam Rifle connects to the main wing when the kit is reconfigured for the MA form display.
  • Drop tank parts included. Loadout extension parts for the wings, distinctive to the Murasame Kai.
  • Squad-build ready. Multiple units intended to be collected for Compass formation displays.

What's in the box

  • Runners for the STTS/F-400 Murasame Kai

  • 1 × Beam Rifle (with retractable foregrip)
  • 1 × Shield
  • 1 × MA Transformation Parts Set (exchangeable parts for MA form silhouette)

Compatible kits and accessories

This is a mobile suit kit, not an accessory. The Murasame Kai uses the standard 3 mm back-mount socket in MS mode, so it pairs with the standard Bandai action base system.

No display base is included with the kit. For posing the Murasame Kai in MA mode (which doesn't stand on its own without support), pair the kit with the Bandai Action Base 2, the standard 1/144 display stand. The MA configuration particularly benefits from a base because the horizontal jet form needs support along its centre of gravity.

What to watch for

Bandai have explicitly omitted a working transformation mechanism in favour of parts-swap MA recreation, so don't expect a folding gimmick. The trade-off is a much cleaner silhouette in each mode than a working transformation would deliver. No significant build weaknesses flagged by independent reviewers.

Builder Tips. Build the kit in MS form first, then read the MA-form parts swap section of the manual carefully before attempting your first transformation. A dark grey or black panel line marker reads well on the grey-green armour. If you're building multiples for a Compass formation, slight variations in panel-line tone make each unit feel like a separate machine. The MA mode benefits from a clear Action Base 2 because the horizontal silhouette needs support along its centre of gravity.

Build notes

No glue required for the standard build, this is snap-fit. A basic Gunpla tool kit (sharp side cutters or nippers, a hobby knife for clean-up, a panel line marker) is recommended though not essential. Allow 2 to 3 hours total build time at a relaxed pace, longer if you panel line or work through both display modes. Recommended age 8 and over per the Bandai box.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level of skill is required to build the HG Murasame Kai?

Mecha Express tags the Murasame Kai as both beginner and intermediate, and Bandai rate it for ages 8 and over. It's a snap-fit HG 1/144 kit. No glue and no paint required. Expect 2 to 3 hours for a clean snap-build. The MA-form parts swap adds time and a second display mode but not difficulty.

Who pilots the Murasame Kai in the film?

The Murasame Kai is a mass-production mobile suit deployed by Compass in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom (2024 film), originally developed by Orb Union and rolled into the Compass joint task force. Multiple Compass pilots crew the unit as a squadron rather than being tied to a single named pilot. Multiple Murasame Kai units played major roles across the film's battles.

Does the Murasame Kai transform like a working mechanism?

No. Bandai deliberately omitted a working transformation mechanism on this kit. Instead, the MA form is recreated via a dedicated set of exchangeable parts that lock in to deliver a clean MA silhouette. The trade-off is a much cleaner silhouette in each mode than a working transformation typically gives, but you do swap parts between the two displayable configurations rather than fold the kit.

Does the kit need paint to look like the anime?

No. The Murasame Kai is moulded in colour, reproducing the Compass-era grey-green-white scheme through individually moulded parts rather than colour-correcting stickers. Panel lining brings out the angular armour seams further, but it's optional. A thin matte top coat takes the moulded shine off for a more military aesthetic.

What's included in the box?

Runners for the STTS/F-400 Murasame Kai, one beam saber, one beam rifle with retractable foregrip, one shield, the MA transformation parts set, two drop tank parts, and one sticker sheet. No display base is included, so consider pairing the kit with a Bandai Action Base 2 (the standard 1/144 stand) for posing in MA mode, which doesn't stand independently on its own.
