Bandai 1/144 HG Monkey Rodi (598 unit) / Monkey Crab Rodi

HG Monkey Rodi (598 Unit) / Monkey Crab Rodi – Transform Between Battle Modes.

Straight from the battlefields of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans: Urdr Hunt, the Monkey Rodi (598th Unit) crashes into Australia for the first time. This isn't your standard grunt suit—this is a brutal, custom-modified machine built by the Rakow pirate crew for pilot 598's aggressive fighting style.

What makes this HG kit special? Two mobile suits in one box. Switch between the standard Monkey Rodi configuration and the devastating Monkey Crab Rodi variant with included transformation parts. Swap out hands for claw manipulators, mount forearm machine guns, and watch this orange-shouldered beast go from brawler to close-quarters destroyer.

Packed with battlefield weaponry including a crowbar, submachine gun, shield, and mountable grenades, this kit delivers the rough-and-ready aesthetic IBO fans love. The Rodi frame's proven engineering means solid articulation and stability, while the custom parts let you recreate iconic scenes from the Urdr Hunt mobile game.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Monkey Rodi and Monkey Crab Rodi modes?

The Monkey Rodi (598 Unit) is the base configuration—a heavily modified Rodi Frame suit with orange shoulders and that distinctive horn, armed with a crowbar, submachine gun, shield, and grenades for versatile combat. The Monkey Crab Rodi transformation takes things further. Swap the standard hands for claw manipulators and add forearm-mounted machine guns to create the Rakow pirate crew's close-quarters specialist. It's the same mobile suit, but optimized for 598's aggressive, in-your-face fighting style. This kit includes all the parts you need to build either configuration or switch between them—essentially two display options from one box. Perfect for builders who love versatility or want to recreate specific battle scenes from Urdr Hunt.

Is this suitable for beginners, or do I need building experience?

This is a High Grade (HG) 1/144 scale kit, which sits in the sweet spot for most builders. If you've built any HG Gundam model kits before, you'll feel right at home—standard colour-separated parts, no glue required, snap-fit assembly. The transformation gimmick adds a bit of extra complexity compared to a basic HG, but nothing intimidating. You're essentially building one mobile suit with swappable parts rather than dealing with complex transformation mechanisms. The included instructions clearly show both configurations. New to Gunpla? This is definitely buildable as your first or second kit, especially if you're an IBO fan. Take your time with the small parts (those claw manipulators and grenades), and you'll have a fantastic build experience. Want to level it up? Grab a Gundam Ultra Fine Panel Liner to bring out all those mechanical details and weathering effects that make IBO mobile suits look battle-worn and realistic.

What accessories are included, and can I display both weapon loadouts?

You get a seriously versatile arsenal with this kit: Weapons & Equipment: Crowbar (for brutal melee combat) Submachine gun (standard Rodi armament) Shield (detachable, poseable) 2× Grenades (one can mount to side armor) Special right hand part designed for grenade-holding poses Transformation Parts: Standard hands (for Monkey Rodi mode) Claw manipulators (for Monkey Crab Rodi mode) Forearm machine gun parts Complete sticker sheet for markings and details You can absolutely mix and match loadouts—there's no rule saying Monkey Crab Rodi can't carry the shield or that Monkey Rodi can't use certain weapons. Experiment with poses and create your own battlefield configurations. Display tip: Use an Action Base No.1 or No.5 (sold separately) to achieve dynamic flying or combat poses that really show off the weaponry and articulation.

How does this compare to other IBO mobile suits in the HG line?

The Monkey Rodi stands out in the IBO HG lineup for several reasons: Unique transformation gimmick – Most IBO kits are single-configuration builds. This gives you two distinct display options from one purchase, making it excellent value for collectors building an Urdr Hunt squad. Pirate crew aesthetic – While main series kits like the Barbatos or Kimaris have that pristine, military-grade finish, the Monkey Rodi embraces the rough, salvaged, customized look of pirate operations. Perfect if you want variety on your shelf beyond Tekkadan and Gjallarhorn forces. Rodi frame reliability – Built on the same proven frame as the standard Graze Rodi and other Rodi variants, so you get solid articulation, good stability, and easy compatibility with other IBO kits for kitbashing projects. Urdr Hunt exclusive – This mobile suit appears in the Iron-Blooded Orphans: Urdr Hunt mobile game, making it essential for completionist collectors who want every corner of the IBO universe represented. It pairs beautifully with other grunt suits and customs from the series, letting you build out pirate crews, mercenary forces, or battlefield dioramas beyond the main storyline.
