Series Assembly Guide FAQ

Bandai 1/144 HG Gundam Calibarn

Suletta Mercury's true final Gundam, the answer to the Aerial

The X-EX01 Gundam Calibarn is the Gundam that closes Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury. Built as the proper successor to the original Aerial, the Calibarn carries the GUND format on Suletta Mercury's terms in the climactic act. From episode 22 onward, it's the suit Suletta uses to break through Quiet Zero and force the resolution of the Benerit Group conflict.

The kit lands in classic Gundam tricolour, white, blue, and red over a clean, modern silhouette. For collectors building the full WFM cast, the Calibarn is the hero kit that completes the lineup alongside the Aerial Rebuild.

Build difficulty

Standard HG 1/144 snap-fit. Bandai rate it age 8 and over. Mecha Express tags it both beginner and intermediate: a confident first-timer can manage it, and an intermediate builder will appreciate the Calibarn's clean engineering. Expect 2 to 4 hours at a relaxed pace for a clean snap. No glue. No paint required.

Technical highlights

The Calibarn carries Aerial-family articulation with the standard Witch from Mercury ball-joint frame and anterior and posterior leaning at the neck and waist. Colour separation handles the tricolour scheme without colour-correcting stickers on the main armour. The kit ships with a beam rifle, beam shield, and dual beam sabers, with effect-part beam blades for the sabers. The chest sensor lens is reproduced in clear plastic for a built-in colour pop.

What makes this kit special

  • The series' true final Gundam. Calibarn is the suit that resolves the final arc. Essential for any Witch from Mercury display.
  • Classic Gundam tricolour silhouette. White, blue, red. A clean modern read on the original Gundam visual identity.
  • Standard WFM articulation. Same ball-joint engineering as the Aerial line, anterior and posterior leaning at the neck and waist.
  • Clear chest sensor lens. Reproduced in clear plastic for a built-in glow without paint.
  • Beam shield + beam rifle + dual beam sabers. Full hero loadout, not a stripped-back drop.

What's in the box

  • Runners for the X-EX01 Gundam Calibarn
  • 1 × Beam Rifle
  • 1 × Beam Shield
  • 2 × Beam Sabers (with effect-part blades)
  • Standard HG hand parts set
  • 1 × Sticker sheet

Compatible kits and accessories

This is a mobile suit kit, not an accessory. The Calibarn uses the standard 3 mm back-mount socket, so it pairs with the standard Bandai action base system.

No display base is included with the kit. For dynamic poses, pair the Calibarn with the Bandai Action Base 2, the standard 1/144 display stand. The Witch from Mercury Display Base is the matching series accessory.

Fast Australian shipping

Dispatched same day from our Brisbane warehouse if ordered before 2pm AEST on weekdays. Free shipping Australia-wide on orders over $199. Genuine Australian stock in hand, not ordered through an overseas proxy. Packed securely in a sturdy outer box with water-soluble cornstarch void fill that dissolves cleanly in the sink.

What to watch for

No significant build weaknesses flagged by independent reviewers. Calibarn benefits from the included beam-shield being lightweight enough that the hand grip handles it without strain, unlike some heavier weapon loadouts in the WFM range.

Builder Tips. A grey or light grey panel line marker reads better than black on the lighter armour panels. The clear chest sensor lens responds well to a thin coat of clear blue or clear green if you want to push the inner glow further. The beam saber effect parts read well with no top coat, but a satin clear coat will tone down the moulded shine if you want a more realistic look.

Build notes

No glue required for the standard build, this is snap-fit. A basic Gunpla tool kit (sharp side cutters or nippers, a hobby knife for clean-up, a panel line marker) is recommended though not essential. Allow 2 to 4 hours total build time at a relaxed pace. Recommended age 8 and over per the Bandai box.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level of skill is required to build the HG Gundam Calibarn?

Mecha Express tags the Calibarn as both beginner and intermediate, and Bandai rate it for ages 8 and over. It's a standard HG 1/144 snap-fit kit. No glue and no paint required to look right out of the box. Expect 2 to 4 hours for a clean snap-build. Newcomers can absolutely manage it, and intermediate builders will appreciate the clean tricolour separation.

Who pilots the Gundam Calibarn in the anime?

Suletta Mercury, the series' protagonist. The Calibarn is her true final Gundam, used from episode 22 onwards to break the Quiet Zero data storm and force the resolution of the Benerit Group conflict. It's the suit that closes the show.

Does the kit need paint to look like the anime?

No. The Calibarn reproduces its classic white-blue-red tricolour through moulded parts rather than colour-correcting stickers. The clear chest sensor lens is moulded in clear plastic for a built-in glow without paint. Panel lining brings out the armour seams further, but it's optional.

What weapons are included?

Full hero loadout: one beam rifle, one beam shield, and two beam sabers with effect-part blades. The beam shield is lightweight enough that the hand grip handles it cleanly without strain, unlike heavier weapon loadouts in the WFM range.

What's included in the box?

Runners for the X-EX01 Gundam Calibarn, one beam rifle, one beam shield, two beam sabers with effect parts, the standard HG hand parts set, and one sticker sheet. No display base is included, so consider pairing the kit with a Bandai Action Base 2 (the standard 1/144 stand) for dynamic posing.
