Bandai 1/144 HG Gundam Age-1 Spallow

The AGE System's answer to speed

Where Titus is about hitting harder, Spallow is about not getting hit at all. It shares the AGE-1's head and torso, but the arms and legs are rebuilt slim and streamlined for high-speed combat, and a new axis system gives it a genuinely different way of moving. Flit Asuno pulls this configuration out when the fight calls for evasion over brute force.

This is the 2011 High Grade release, the third kit in the HG AGE line.

Build difficulty

Snap-fit, moulded in colour, no glue required, and a quick build overall. The new axis system means a slightly different assembly sequence in the limbs compared to a standard HG, but nothing here is genuinely difficult. A fine choice for a first or second kit.

What to watch for

The thin legs are the one recurring theme in builder feedback. More than one review notes the feet could have been wider, since the slim design makes standing and balancing less confident than a standard AGE-1, and a stand is genuinely preferred for display rather than optional. The feet themselves are also less articulated than the legs.

The other thing worth knowing before you buy is the weapon count: Spallow ships with just the Sickle Blade, and one review notes it would have been close to perfect with a bit more armament. That is a fair trade for the slim, fast-looking silhouette, but it is worth knowing going in.

Builder tips: use a stand for anything beyond a simple standing pose, especially with the Sickle Blade held out. The fully movable joints genuinely can hold the show's dodge-and-strike poses, so it is worth experimenting rather than defaulting to a static stance. Fold the knee panels down at least once to show off the hidden cannons, it is the kit's best trick.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
