Series Assembly Guide FAQ

Bandai 1/144 HG Gundam Age-1 Normal

The first Gundam in a story about three

Gundam AGE tells one story across three generations of pilots, and the AGE-1 is where it starts. Flit Asuno builds and flies it as the first mobile suit capable of standing against the UE, the Unknown Enemy nobody else can touch. This is the Normal configuration, the base loadout before the Titus and Spallow upgrade parts change what it can do.

This was the first kit in Bandai's HG AGE line, released alongside the show in 2011.

Build difficulty

A straightforward snap-fit High Grade. Moulded in colour, no glue required, and a large number of snap-fit parts keep the assembly quick. Suitable for beginner to intermediate builders. A few parts benefit from careful trimming given the detail level, but nothing here is difficult.

Technical highlights

The frame uses ball joints at the chest and torso with a twistable waist, plus a double-axis movement mechanism and a rotational axis built in specifically for better posing. That is more articulation engineering than a typical first-season HG usually gets. The weapon set is generous: a beam rifle, a beam shield, and four separate beam sabers.

What makes this kit special

  • Double-axis movement mechanism: a dedicated rotational axis built in for posing beyond a standard ball joint.
  • Ball-jointed chest and torso: with a twistable waist for a genuinely flexible upper body.
  • Four beam sabers included: a much deeper melee set than most kits at this scale carry.
  • Beam shield: defensive gear beyond the standard physical shield most HGs carry.
  • The kit that opens the AGE story: the base configuration before the Titus and Spallow upgrades change the loadout.

What to watch for

Articulation opinions vary depending on what you compare it to. It holds up well against other HGs from the same period, but is not as flexible as a modern kit if you are chasing very dramatic poses. One practical gap worth knowing: unlike the anime, the kit has no way to store the DODS Rifle on the rear waist armour, so you will need to hold it or find your own display solution rather than clipping it away.

No repeated structural fault came up in what I found. The consistent theme is a solid, well-engineered entry-line HG for its era.

Builder tips: the chest symbol and other fine details are handled by stickers on a separate sprue, so if you want to paint them instead the parts are already isolated for you. Plan a display solution for the beam rifle when it is not in hand, since there is no built-in storage point on the waist. Panel lining picks out the double-axis joint detail nicely.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife and sanding sticks. Expect around an hour to an hour and a half. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What weapons actually come in the box?

A beam rifle, a beam shield, and four separate beam sabers. That is a genuinely deep melee set for an HG at this price point, most kits give you one or two sabers rather than four.

Is this a good first Gunpla?

Yes. It is snap-fit, moulded in colour, needs no glue, and goes together in about an hour to an hour and a half. The double-axis movement mechanism also means it poses better than a lot of other kits pitched at beginners.

Where does this fit in the AGE story?

It is the very first kit in the line, Flit Asuno's original AGE-1 in its base Normal configuration, before the Titus and Spallow upgrade parts change its loadout later in the story. It's the natural starting point if you're building the AGE line in order.

Can I store the rifle on the suit when it's not in use?

Not on the kit itself. Unlike the anime, there is no mounting point on the rear waist armour to clip the rifle away, so you will need to hold it in the pose or plan your own display solution rather than expecting a stowage slot.

How does the articulation compare to a modern HG?

Solid for its era but not as flexible as a current-generation kit if you are chasing very extreme poses. The ball-jointed chest and torso and the double-axis mechanism were genuinely good engineering for a first-season HG in 2011, and it still holds up well today.
