Bandai 1/144 HG Agnes Giebenrath's Gyan Strom

Agnes Giebenrath's violet Gyan, a SEED Freedom flagship grunt with eight ways to attack

The HG Gyan Strom (Agnes Giebenrath Custom) is Agnes's personal mobile suit in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, the 2024 film that closes the Cosmic Era. As a member of Compass, Agnes fields the customised violet Gyan variant with a distinctive loadout: beam axe, beam rifle, beam gatlings, heat rod, and chest-armour-deployed Gatling extension. It's one of the most varied weapon kits in the SEED Freedom HG range.

The kit is for SEED Freedom collectors who want one of the standout side-character mechs, and for builders who want a kit with serious posing options across multiple loadout configurations.

Build difficulty

HG 1/144 snap-fit with the SEED Action System internal structure. Bandai rate it age 8 and over. Mecha Express tags it both beginner and intermediate. The wide accessory set adds parts and configuration choices but the core build remains snap-fit-friendly. Expect 3 to 4 hours at a relaxed pace for a clean snap, longer if you panel line or set up the chest-armour Gatling deployment carefully. No glue. No paint required.

Technical highlights

The headline is the loadout flexibility. The signature beam axe mounts to the waist via a swap-in storage grip, the movable wings rotate the missile launcher forward into firing position, and the chest armour deploys to insert the Gatling parts for the extended Gatling state. A Heat Rod part attaches to the right arm. The SEED Action System internal frame holds the iconic SEED poses with leg pivot axes, and a sliding mechanism in the shoulder armour connection extends the arm articulation range. Shield effect parts add dynamic display options.

What makes this kit special

  • Eight different weapon configurations. Beam axe, beam saber, beam rifle, dual beam gatlings, heat rod, shield, chest-Gatling extension. Most HGs ship with three or four weapons.
  • Chest armour Gatling deployment. The chest plates open up and the included Gatling parts insert to reproduce the in-film extended state.
  • Sliding shoulder armour connection. Enhances the arm articulation range beyond the standard HG frame.
  • Beam axe with storage grip swap. Mounts to the waist when not in hand, distinctive to the Gyan Strom lineage.
  • SEED Action System. Specialised internal structure engineered for the film's iconic SEED poses, with leg pivot axes.
  • Movable wings reposition missile launcher. Wings rotate to bring the launcher forward for fire-pose displays.

Compatible kits and accessories

This is a mobile suit kit, not an accessory. The Gyan Strom uses the standard 3 mm back-mount socket, so it pairs with the standard Bandai action base system.

No display base is included with the kit. For dynamic poses or the chest-Gatling-deployed configuration, pair the Gyan Strom with the Bandai Action Base 2, the standard 1/144 display stand. SEED Action System poses generally benefit from a base because the leg pivot axes don't always hold weight unsupported.

What to watch for

Independent reviews flag the kit as one of the standout SEED Freedom HG releases, with no significant build weaknesses called out. The wide accessory set means the build itself takes longer than a basic HG, but the time is in setup and accessory swapping rather than fighting the kit's engineering.

Builder Tips. A black panel line marker reads well on the violet armour. The chest-Gatling deployment looks better when set up before final body assembly so the chest plates open cleanly. The wing missile launcher reposition pose benefits from being set against a base because the rotated wings shift the centre of gravity forward. The shield effect parts read best when the shield is held in a forward block position rather than at the side.

Build notes

No glue required for the standard build, this is snap-fit. A basic Gunpla tool kit (sharp side cutters or nippers, a hobby knife for clean-up, a panel line marker) is recommended though not essential. Allow 3 to 4 hours total build time at a relaxed pace, longer if you panel line or work through multiple loadout configurations. Recommended age 8 and over per the Bandai box.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level of skill is required to build the HG Gyan Strom Agnes Custom?

Mecha Express tags it both beginner and intermediate, and Bandai rate it for ages 8 and over. It's an HG 1/144 snap-fit kit with the SEED Action System frame. No glue and no paint required. Expect 3 to 4 hours for a clean snap-build, longer if you work through all the loadout configurations. The build is snap-fit-friendly but the wide accessory set adds time.

Who pilots the Gyan Strom in the film?

Agnes Giebenrath, a member of Compass in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. The violet customised Gyan is her personal mobile suit, distinct from the standard Gyan Strom variant that other Compass pilots field.

How does the chest Gatling deployment work?

The chest armour plates open up, and the included Gatling parts insert into the exposed mounting points to reproduce the in-film extended Gatling state. It's a parts-swap rather than a folding gimmick, so the deployment is best set up before final body assembly so the chest plates open cleanly.

How many weapons are included?

Eight: a beam axe with storage-grip swap, a beam saber, a beam rifle, two beam gatlings, the chest-mounted Gatling deployment parts, the heat rod attachment for the right arm, and the shield with effect parts. Most HGs ship with three or four weapons, so this kit is a notable outlier for loadout variety.

What's included in the box?

Runners for the Gyan Strom (Agnes Giebenrath Custom), one beam axe with storage grip, one heat rod part, one beam saber, one beam rifle, two beam gatlings, one shield, one set of effect parts (including shield effects), joint parts, the standard HG hand parts set, and one sticker sheet. No display base is included, so consider pairing the kit with a Bandai Action Base 2 for dynamic posing.
