The RX-78 NT-1 Gundam "Alex" is the prototype mobile suit at the centre of Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, and this Ver. 2.0 release is Bandai's ground-up redesign of the Master Grade kit. If you've wanted the Alex with a genuinely detailed inner frame and the removable Chobham Armour done properly, this is the version to build.

Build difficulty

This is a Skill Level 3 kit, better suited to builders who've completed at least one MG kit already. The inner frame assembly and the Chobham Armour attachment both reward patience, and you're effectively building two looks in one (lightly armoured and fully plated), so budget a longer session than a standard MG.

Technical highlights

The Ver. 2.0 redesign gives the Alex a new inner frame with a wider range of articulation and better stability than the original release, plus updated armour proportions. New parts include a broken blade antenna variant and a mask piece previously only available on the SD Gundam version. The Chobham Armour set is fully removable, with arm-mounted gatling gun armour built in, so you can display the Alex lightly armoured or fully plated. On the positive side, both reviewers agreed the colour separation is strong and the inner frame detail holds up well. Accounts differ on how the wrist joint feels: one reviewer called it tight with good articulation, another found it stiff, so treat that one as unresolved rather than settled either way.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.3. Basic modeling skills are essential. These kits are not recommended for beginners or children due to the high level of complexity of assembly and the sheer volume of parts. Experience in building more complex Gunpla models is recommended. Parental supervision is essential. A full set of hobby tools is recommended that includes, nippers, hobby knives, sandpaper, sanding sticks, files, buffing files, glues, tweezers, and decal adhesive/softener. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
