Yzak Joule's heavy hitter, armoured for war
The GAT-X102 Duel Gundam was one of the five stolen Earth Alliance prototypes that ZAFT turned into its own machines during the First Alliance-PLANT War. This kit gives Yzak Joule's suit the Assault Shroud treatment, a full set of heavy add-on armour that trades some of the base Duel's mobility for serious close-range firepower.
Build it as the standard Duel Gundam, or bolt on the Assault Shroud for the up-armoured combat loadout seen in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Either way, this is a kit for builders who want options on the shelf.
Build difficulty
This is a Master Grade kit with two configurations to build, so budget more time than a standard MG. Expect the base Duel Gundam assembly first, then a second pass fitting the Assault Shroud's armour panels, weapon mounts, and the opening cockpit hatch. Builders who have finished a Master Grade kit before will get through this comfortably. First-time MG builders can still manage it, just go slowly around the Assault Shroud's skirt and shoulder attachment points, which need a firm, deliberate click rather than a light press (see What to Watch For below).
Technical highlights
The Duel Gundam's inner frame gives full range of motion at the shoulders, hips, knees and ankles, and that articulation carries through even with the Assault Shroud fitted. The chest hatch opens to show a moulded cockpit interior, and colour separation covers the white, blue and yellow SEED-era ZAFT scheme without needing paint for a clean out-of-the-box finish.
What Makes This Kit Special
-
Two configurations, one kit: build the base Duel Gundam or add the Assault Shroud for the up-armoured combat loadout, and switch between them once the parts are painted or panel-lined.
-
Full five-weapon arsenal: the 57mm high-energy rifle with 175mm grenade launcher, the Shiva 115mm rail gun, the 250mm five-barrel missile pod and the 350mm bazooka all mount onto the Assault Shroud, alongside twin beam sabers for the base suit.
-
Openable cockpit hatch: pop the chest hatch for a display angle most Gundam SEED kits don't offer.
-
Two Yzak Joule pilot figures: a sitting figure for the cockpit and a standing figure for a display base, both included.
-
No paint needed for a clean finish: the white, blue and yellow ZAFT colour scheme is moulded in, not stickered on.

What to watch for
More than one build write-up flags the same spot on this kit: the Assault Shroud's front skirt and shoulder armour panels can pop loose during posing, particularly once the arms are moved through a full range of motion. It's a friction-fit issue rather than a structural fault, and a small dot of clear-drying glue or a slightly firmer push on final assembly keeps the panels seated. The base Duel Gundam underneath doesn't share the issue.
Builder Tips: Test-fit the Assault Shroud's skirt armour a couple of times before final assembly so you know how far the clips need to seat. If you're planning to switch between the base Duel Gundam and the Assault Shroud configuration, avoid gluing the armour mounts so the parts stay swappable.
Build notes
Snap-fit assembly, no cement required for a standard build. Nippers and a hobby knife recommended for clean part removal. Two configurations to build means a longer session than a single-mode MG, budget 4 to 6 hours. Recommended age 15+.
