Meet CharZaku-Kun, the red ace of the Gunpla mascot line

CharZaku-Kun is the Char's Zaku II-toned sibling to Gunpla-kun, the same life-size mascot format done up in the red MS-06S colourway from the original Mobile Suit Gundam. He's styled after Char Aznable's own Zaku II, mono-eye and all, and comes with a Zaku loadout scaled to his size.

He's simple and satisfying to build, whether that's your first-ever kit or a palate cleanser between bigger projects. Build him standing proud with his Heat Hawk and Zaku Machine Gun, or choose the runner version and display him on the sprue.

Build difficulty

About as approachable as Gunpla gets. Bandai rates him for builders aged 8 and up, the box carries the No Glue icon, and the whole thing is snap-fit. You will want a pair of nippers to cut the parts from the runner. The parts are moulded in colour, so there is no painting needed for a standard build.

Technical highlights

CharZaku-Kun is moulded in Bandai's coloured plastic, in the red MS-06S scheme rather than the standard Zaku II green. Bandai lists the mono-eye as movable left and right, giving him the same eye-movement gag long associated with the character. What to watch for

Builder discussion of this specific kit is thin. One builder who posted a finished CharZaku-Kun described it as an amazing kit for beginners, taking about an hour and a half with a little sanding and no panel lining. One builder of the original Gunpla-kun, a different kit, reported that the thinner parts felt a little soft and fragile and snapped fairly easily, so take your time with the nippers.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
