Bandai 1/144 HGUC RX-78-2 Gundam (REVIVE)

The Bandai 1/144 High Grade Universal Century RX-78-2 Gundam (REVIVE) is Amuro Ray's iconic mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam, completely redesigned with modern engineering. This HGUC REVIVE release captures the original Gundam's distinctive tricolour scheme with enhanced articulation, improved proportions, and the Kusabi gate system for cleaner part removal. It's the definitive 1/144 scale version of the One Year War's most legendary Earth Federation mobile suit.

This kit includes approximately 200 parts and features snap-fit construction with no glue required. The HGUC REVIVE engineering is designed for beginner to intermediate builders.

The build centres on the updated inner frame that provides significantly improved articulation compared to the original 2001 HGUC release. You get the beam rifle, hyper bazooka, two beam sabers, shield, and core fighter. The colour separation delivers the RX-78-2's white, red, blue, and yellow scheme with minimal painting needed. The engineering features the Kusabi gate system that reduces nub marks during part removal and polycap-free joints that maintain tight articulation over time. The proportions have been refined to match modern animation references while preserving the classic Gundam silhouette.

What Makes This Kit Special

  • REVIVE Engineering: Complete redesign with modern articulation and proportions compared to the 2001 HGUC release
  • Kusabi Gate System: Advanced gate placement reduces nub marks for cleaner part removal
  • Enhanced Articulation: Improved shoulder, hip, and ankle joints for dynamic action poses
  • Polycap-Free Joints: Maintains tight articulation without traditional polycap degradation
  • Core Fighter Included: Removable core fighter unit with cockpit detail
  • Complete Weapon Arsenal: Beam rifle, hyper bazooka, dual beam sabers, and shield
  • Refined Proportions: Updated to match modern animation references while preserving classic design
  • Beginner-Friendly Build: Straightforward assembly suitable for first-time Gunpla builders
  • Snap-Fit Construction: No glue required for assembly, parts snap together securely

Known Build Considerations

The REVIVE is a fantastic kit with modern engineering, but there are a few quirks worth knowing about. These are minor issues on an otherwise excellent build, and they're easy to work around once you know what to expect.

Pop-Out Shoulders (Most Common Issue): This is the most complained-about issue with the REVIVE. The ball joint for the shoulder is slightly too small for the socket, meaning the arms can fall off if you rotate them past 90 degrees. This is frustrating during posing but has a simple fix: apply a single thin coat of clear paint or nail polish to the shoulder ball joints and let it dry completely. This will permanently solve the arm-dropping issue and make the kit much more enjoyable to pose.

Loose Toe Joints: The toe bend is great for dynamic posing, but the joint is very loose out of the box. This makes Grandpa Gundam prone to tipping forward if not on an Action Base. If you're displaying without a stand, pose the toes flat or apply a tiny amount of clear nail polish to the toe joint to add friction.

Shoulder Armour Swing-Joint: The yellow collar area and the shoulder joint are very slim. If you push the arm upward too hard, you can stress the thin plastic of the torso frame. Be gentle when raising the arms above shoulder height and let the swing joint do its job rather than forcing the arm upward.

Red Waist Part (Part B14): The red piece that holds the V-fin and the V symbol on the crotch is a very tight snap-fit. If you ever need to take it apart for painting, you will break the internal pegs. If you're planning to paint this kit, sand down the internal pegs slightly before assembly to allow for easier disassembly later. Otherwise, assemble it once and leave it alone.

Ankle Guard Pins: The tiny pins that let the ankle guards pivot are very fragile. If the guard pops off, do not force it back in without checking the pin alignment first. Take your time and make sure everything lines up properly before pressing it back together.

Stability Rating: 9/10. This kit has fantastic articulation and holds poses beautifully once you've addressed the shoulder issue. It's a bit fidgety out of the box due to the loose shoulders and toes, but with the simple fixes mentioned above, it becomes one of the best-posing High Grade kits in the entire HGUC line.

The Fix: Thicken the shoulder ball joints with a single thin coat of clear paint or nail polish. This is the most important fix and will transform your experience with this kit. For the waist part, if you're planning to paint, sand the internal pegs slightly before assembly. For the toes, add a tiny amount of clear polish to the joint if you're displaying without an Action Base.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
