Meet Gunpla-kun, in colour for the first time

Gunpla-kun is the mascot of the whole Gunpla hobby, the star of Bandai's short ad spots that have taught a generation of builders the basics. He's always been moulded in white and grey before. This DX Set is the first time he's ever come in his full RX-78-2 colours, and the first time Bandai has multi-coloured LIMEX, its limestone-based eco material, in a single kit.

He's tiny (built height sits around 84mm) and he's simple, so he's a genuinely good pick for a first-ever build or a shelf-filler between bigger projects. Build him standing proud with his beam rifle, sabre and shield, or lock him into his signature "still on the runner" pose using the parts made just for that gag.

Build difficulty

This is about as approachable as Gunpla gets. Bandai rates him for builders aged 8 and up, the part count is tiny (each arm and each leg is a single moulded piece), and the whole thing is snap-fit, no cement required for a standard build. Where it asks a little more care than a regular styrene HG is the material: LIMEX has a different feel to the plastic you're used to, and builder reports consistently flag it as more prone to whitening or a light chip at the nub mark when you trim a part free. Take it slow with the nippers and you'll be finished well within the hour.

Technical highlights

Gunpla-kun's body is moulded in Bandai's LIMEX, a material that's more than 50 percent limestone by weight and a real step down in petroleum-derived plastic compared with standard Gunpla styrene. It's the first time LIMEX has been produced in full colour rather than a single tone. The included runner-display parts (the ones that recreate his "still on the sprue" look) are moulded on a separate sprue from the LIMEX body, marked PP (polypropylene) according to one builder's close-up photos of the parts. Colour separation comes almost entirely from the moulded plastic itself, only the fine black trim around his eyes needs the single included foil sticker. Articulation is deliberately minimal: ball-joints at the head, each arm and each leg give a small swivel range, in line with Bandai's own instructions that this is a display piece rather than a posable action figure.

Compatible accessories

Gunpla-kun's joints and his weapon-holding hands are sized just for him. Builder reviews confirm his stand peg is too narrow for a standard Bandai Action Base, and there's no official crossover accessory range for this line, so we won't pretend one exists. What to watch for

Drawing on builder reviews and community discussion (Japanese and English hobby blogs, and Mecha Express's own verified customer review on this kit):

  • LIMEX needs a gentler hand at the nippers. Independent builders consistently report that LIMEX shows whitening or a light chip right at the nub mark when a part is trimmed from the runner, more readily than standard Gunpla styrene. One of our own verified customers noted a couple of clips left a slight warp and discolouration on their kit, not enough to spoil the build, but worth knowing before you start.
  • Nub marks don't sand away as easily. A few builders needed a light dab of paint to fully hide a nub mark after clean-up, rather than a quick scrape with a hobby knife.
  • This is a display piece, not an action figure. The ball-joints at the head, arms and legs give a small swivel range and nothing more, in line with Bandai's own instructions. Don't expect dynamic posing.

Builder tips: Support the part close to the cut point when you nip it free rather than pulling. A fine sanding stick cleans up a stubborn nub mark better than a hobby knife blade. If a small part does come loose, ordinary styrene cement or superglue holds LIMEX firmly.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
