Bandai HG Ashsaviour

Bandai's first HG of the Shadow Mirror's balanced ace

The ASK-AD02 Ashsaviour is one of Super Robot Wars' most recognisable original mecha, and this is the first time Bandai has given it a High Grade kit. A high-class "balanced" unit fielded by the Shadow Mirror and flown by officers like Lemon Browning, the Ashsaviour built its name across the Original Generation games on reach and firepower rather than raw brute force. If you have put hours into the OG line, this is the suit finally on your shelf in plastic.

Build difficulty

The Ashsaviour is a snap-fit 1/144 HG, so no glue and no paint are needed for a standard build. It classes around Skill Level 2, basic techniques only: clean nub removal from the runners and a set of marking stickers to apply. Recommended for builders aged 15 and up. A first-timer can get through it fine, and anyone who has built a couple of HGs before will find it a relaxed evening build.

Technical highlights

This one leans on its arsenal. The Halberd Launcher is the headline piece, with a barrel that deploys to recreate its firing state, backed by the Gun Rapier and a pair of Laser Blades for close work. Colour is largely separated through moulded parts, with marking stickers filling in the finer detail. As a standard HG it uses the usual plastic and ABS mix, and the Action Base 7 stand is in the box so you can get it airborne straight away.

What to watch for

This is a recent, niche release and we haven't found a body of independent builder reviews for it yet, so we can't pass on verified fit-and-finish feedback. General note for a kit like this: the fine detail comes from marking stickers rather than water-slide decals, so take your time seating them cleanly, and work slowly with sharp nippers to keep gate marks tidy on the larger armour parts.

Builder tip: a little panel lining with a grey or black marker on the armour seams lifts the finish without any painting.

Build notes

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
