Bandai 1/144 RG MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam

Kamille Bidan's Zeta Gundam, fully transformable in 1/144

The MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam is the variable-form mobile suit Kamille Bidan flies for the AEUG in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. This is Bandai's Real Grade (RG) version, number 10 in the RG line, released in Japan in November 2012. Bandai says the RG series appeared in commemoration of Gunpla's 30th anniversary, and the Zeta's big claim was a complete transformation to Wave Rider mode at 1/144 scale.

It suits Universal Century fans, transformable-kit collectors, and builders who want an RG with a real gimmick and are happy to handle it carefully.

Build difficulty

Bandai rates it 15 and over. One reviewer found no painting is needed anywhere, but the engineering is dense and the transformation is fiddly. One reviewer said the kit needs more patience than many new builders have, and that experienced builders are split on it. Treat it as an intermediate-to-advanced build, with nippers, a hobby knife and fine sanding sticks to hand.

Technical highlights

Bandai built the kit on RG's Advanced MS Joint frame, with real-machine mechanism research behind it. It converts fully to Wave Rider mode without swapping parts. Builder notes say the knees retract and the ankles shorten as the legs fold. Articulation in mobile suit mode is described as high. The colour scheme is blue, white, red and yellow, and the kit comes with a realistic decal sheet.

What makes this kit special

  • Full transformation: mobile suit to Wave Rider without parts swapping, at 1/144.
  • Advanced MS Joint frame: RG's internal frame, with Bandai's real-machine mechanism study.
  • RG number 10: the tenth release in the Real Grade line, released November 2012.
  • Beam rifle and shield: both shown in Bandai's press images, with the backpack binders that fold into the Wave Rider wings.
  • Realistic decal sheet: included for the markings.
  • Compact Wave Rider mode: one reviewer called it nice and compact.

What's in the box

  • Runners (13 moulded sets, per Bandai's accessory list)
  • Realistic decal sheet (1)
  • Assembly manual (1)

Bandai's press images show a beam rifle and shield. There is no hyper mega launcher in this kit.

Compatible accessories

No display base is included. Bandai's press images show the Zeta on an Action Base in both modes, and a base makes the Wave Rider display much easier.

What to watch for

  • Fragile during transformation: two builder write-ups describe the kit as delicate when transforming. One reported the yellow chest pieces popping off during conversion, and another notes early production shoulder joints that broke, with later reprints revised.
  • Torso and leg attachment: one reviewer found the torso prone to warping or coming apart if mishandled while posing, and the legs held on by small clips.
  • Weak hand grip: the weapon hands have a weak grip, so the rifle can droop.
  • Loose joints and lean: one write-up notes the waist can lean to the heavy side when twisted, and some joints loosen with a lot of movement.

Builder tips: detach the backpack and transform one section at a time, and practise the conversion gently rather than forcing any part.

Build notes

Nippers and a hobby knife for clean-up, and no painting is needed. Recommended age 15 and over per Bandai.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.3. Basic modeling skills are essential. These kits are not recommended for beginners or children due to the high level of complexity of assembly and the sheer volume of parts. Experience in building more complex Gunpla models is recommended. Parental supervision is essential. A full set of hobby tools is recommended that includes, nippers, hobby knives, sandpaper, sanding sticks, files, buffing files, glues, tweezers, and decal adhesive/softener. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Can I get replacement parts if I lose some during the build?

Yes, if you buy a kit from Mecha Express Australia we will source replacement parts for you. This is not a quick process as parts need to come from Bandai in Japan.
