Char Aznable's crimson commander-type Zaku II, built on Bandai's Real Grade inner frame system at 1/144 scale. The MS-06S is one of the most recognisable mobile suits in Gundam, and RG 02 gives it a fully articulated skeleton, a mono-eye that moves on a gear mechanism, the spiked commander shoulder, and the full Zeon weapons loadout.

This one suits a builder who has finished a kit or two. It is snap-fit with no glue or paint required, and the crimson colours are moulded into the parts, so a straight build looks right. What makes it slower than an HG is the detail. The energy pipes on the head, waist and legs are threaded by hand from individual pipe segments rather than moulded in one piece, and there are some genuinely small parts. Give it more than one sitting and it goes together well.

What to Watch For

This is a Real Grade design first released in 2010, with a lot of detail packed into 1/144 scale, so there is more small work here than an HG asks for. Drawing on builder reviews and community threads, plus the reviews left on this page:

The energy pipes. Some builders report these take patience. The cable runs are not moulded in one piece. You slide a row of small separate pipe segments onto a length of flexible plastic wire, one at a time, for the head and waist, and there are coiled springs to fit in the legs. Alex from Sydney, a verified buyer, put it plainly on this page: "I never want to see another bead again." He noted the leg springs were the fiddliest part, because the wire can stretch out of shape while you are threading it. Another reviewer described the beads as the one part of the build that gave him trouble. Go slowly and do not force a connection that does not want to seat.

The side skirts. Some builders report these work loose once the kit is assembled. The front, side and rear panels are made to lift so the legs have clearance, and some builders find they come free while posing. Once it is built, if the skirts feel loose, take care around the waist when you reposition it.

The display stand. Some builders report the kit displays more easily on a stand than standing unaided, particularly in a dynamic pose. The kit includes the small adapter part that clips it to an action base. The action base itself is not included and is sold separately.

The small parts and stickers. Some builders report both want a careful hand. There are some genuinely tiny parts here, and the weapons can pop off the poseable hands if they are not seated properly. On the markings, one reviewer on this page found some stickers had shifted a few days after finishing and put it down to not cleaning the surface first. Wiping the parts down before you apply the stickers is a good habit either way.

These are the parts of the build people talk about afterwards, and they come with the territory on a design this densely detailed.

Build Notes

Panel lining with a Gundam Marker will bring out the surface detail. The shoulder socket joint and the shoulder armour joint both need to be pushed fully home to complete the assembly properly. If you topcoat the kit, use a water-based product, because it includes polypropylene parts.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
