Bandai 1/144 HGUC RX-104FF Penelope

Bandai 1/144 HGUC RX-104FF Penelope

The Bandai 1/144 HGUC RX-104FF Penelope is the High Grade kit of the Earth Federation's most imposing mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash, piloted by Lane Aim in pursuit of the anti-Federation insurgent Mafty. The Penelope is the RX-104FF configuration — the Odysseus Gundam equipped with its Fixed Flight Unit, a massive atmospheric and space combat system that dramatically expands the suit's silhouette and firepower. At 1,280g and 1/144 scale, this is one of the largest and most visually commanding kits in the HGUC line, and it earns that presence on the shelf.

The kit transforms between the full Penelope configuration (Odysseus Gundam with Fixed Flight Unit attached) and the Odysseus Gundam alone, with the Fixed Flight Unit separating cleanly. Pre-moulded in white and gold, the colour separation is strong throughout and the kit includes a beam rifle and beam sabers.

The Penelope is best suited to intermediate builders who are comfortable with larger, more complex HG builds. The transformation mechanism and sheer part count make this a more involved build than a standard HGUC kit, but the snap-fit system keeps it accessible without glue. One thing worth knowing: some builders report slightly loose joints in certain areas due to the weight of the Fixed Flight Unit — a small amount of hobby cement on the joint pegs can resolve this if needed.

What Makes This Kit Special

  • Transforming Fixed Flight Unit: The Fixed Flight Unit detaches cleanly to reveal the Odysseus Gundam beneath, giving you two distinct display configurations in a single kit.
  • Commanding 1/144 Scale Presence: At 1,280g, the Penelope is one of the heaviest and most imposing kits in the HGUC line — the Fixed Flight Unit's large wing binders dominate any shelf it's placed on.
  • Pre-Moulded White and Gold: The Penelope's distinctive white and gold colour scheme is delivered through pre-coloured runners with strong colour separation, requiring minimal paint for a display-ready result.
  • Full Weapon Loadout: Beam rifle and beam sabers included, faithfully recreating the Penelope's armament from Hathaway's Flash.
  • Movable Wing Binders: The large wing binder units on the Fixed Flight Unit are poseable, allowing dynamic flight-mode display configurations.
  • Snap-Fit Construction: No glue required for standard assembly — the transformation and build are designed to be intuitive despite the kit's size and complexity.
  • Hathaway's Flash Centrepiece: The Penelope is the primary antagonist mobile suit of Hathaway's Flash and the natural counterpart to the RX-105 Xi Gundam — essential for anyone building out that conflict.
  • Intricate Panel Line Detail: The surface detail across both the Odysseus Gundam and Fixed Flight Unit rewards panel lining, with mechanical depth that photographs well for display builds.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
