Bandai 1/144 HGUC Zaku II

$26.99 AUD
The classic Zeon grunt from the original Mobile Suit Gundam, rebuilt for HGUC in 2021. Moulded colour does nearly all the work (the mono-eye is the only sticker), and it poses well thanks to plastic joints, double-jointed elbows and knees and an optional soft skirt. It builds clean, though builders do flag loose wrists, and the page below covers the easy fix.

Key features

Hard or soft skirt: fit the sharp PS skirt for display, or the soft skirt that bends so the legs can kick and split.

Full Zaku loadout: machine gun with spare drum, bazooka and heat hawk, plus a horned commander head if you want an officer's machine.

No polycaps, moulded colour: plastic joints throughout and the mono-eye is the only sticker, so a straight build looks right with no paint.

Bandai 1/144 HGUC Zaku II

The classic Zeon grunt, in a modern HGUC build

The Zaku II is the mass-production mobile suit of the Principality of Zeon, and the machine most fans picture when they think of the enemy in the original Mobile Suit Gundam. This 2021 kit, No. 241 in the HGUC line, replaces the 2003 version with a simple, anime-style look and a modern plastic-joint frame.

It suits anyone after a clean, classic Zaku for a Universal Century shelf, including first-time builders.

Build difficulty

This is a Skill Level 2 build on the Mecha Express scale. It's snap-fit with no glue or paint needed, and Bandai rates it for ages 8 and over, so a newer builder can manage it. You'll want a pair of nippers and some patience with clean-up. The one choice to make is which skirt to fit, and the section below explains the difference.

Technical highlights

There are no polycaps in this kit, every joint is plastic. The elbows and knees are double-jointed, the forearm rotates, the waist turns 360 degrees and the shoulders swing forward for two-handed weapon poses. A lever under the head moves the mono-eye left and right.

Colour comes from the moulded plastic, and the only sticker on the kit is the pink mono-eye. The surface detail is deliberately simple to stay close to the anime design, so some builders add panel lining, but it isn't required.

What makes this kit special

  • Two skirt sets: hard PS plastic for the sharpest look, or soft material that bends so the legs can swing much further.
  • Plastic-joint frame: no polycaps, with double-jointed elbows and knees and a wide range of movement.
  • Grunt or commander: the standard head is hornless, and a horned commander head is included as an option.
  • The full Zaku loadout: machine gun with a spare drum magazine, bazooka and heat hawk.
  • Weapon storage: the bazooka mounts on the rear skirt with either skirt set, and the heat hawk and spare drum store on the hard skirt.
  • Grips that move: the machine gun and bazooka foregrips swing, so a two-handed hold looks natural.
  • One-piece spiked shoulder: the spikes are separate parts, which gives them a cleaner cone shape.

What's in the box

  • Plastic runners to build the MS-06 Zaku II, moulded in colour
  • Hard PS skirt parts (1 set)
  • Soft material skirt parts (1 set)
  • Optional horned commander head part
  • Hands (6 total): weapon-holding pair, trigger-finger pair, right heat hawk hand, left open hand
  • Zaku machine gun with spare drum magazine
  • Zaku bazooka
  • Heat hawk with mounting piece
  • Adapter for fitting an Action Base (base not included)
  • Foil sticker sheet
  • Instruction manual

Compatible accessories

No display base is included with the kit. For dynamic poses of the Zaku II in mid-air or mid-swing, pair it with the Bandai Action Base 2, the standard 1/144 display stand. Use the adapter from the box, because the skirt has no stand hole of its own.

What to watch for

Drawing on builder reviews and community threads (r/Gunpla, hobby blogs and Japanese build reviews, plus buyer reviews of this kit). Several of these notes also come from builders of the 2020 Char's Zaku II, which this kit is based on:

  • Loose wrists are the main complaint. The extra ball joint at the wrist gives a useful range of movement, but builders repeatedly say it can work loose or pop out, especially holding a weapon.
  • Soft knee cables. Some builders note the soft power cables behind the knee bend sharply at full flex, and one worried they could tear with repeated posing. Go easy on them.
  • Hip-mounted weapons. One buyer found the weapons don't stay on the hip mounts well. Remember the heat hawk and spare drum mounts only work with the hard skirt.
  • Seam lines. Reviews point to seams on the side of the head, the shoulder blocks, the forearms and part of the knee frame. A straight build still looks tidy, so this only matters if you plan to paint.
  • Hard skirt limits the legs. With the hard skirt, the legs don't swing far backwards. The soft skirt fixes that, but the heat hawk and spare drum can't mount on it.

Builder tips: for loose wrists, builders suggest a light coat of clear topcoat or a tiny dab of super glue on the ball joint, left to dry fully before you assemble it. One builder found one of the two similar right hands won't grip the heat hawk because of a raised section by the thumb, so if it doesn't fit, try the other one. If you spray a matte topcoat, skip the soft parts.

Build notes

No glue is required, and no batteries. Basic tools do the job: side cutters or nippers, a hobby knife for clean-up, and tweezers for the mono-eye sticker. You'll have a few parts left over when you finish, which is normal. Bandai's recommended age is 8 and over, so younger builders may want a hand with the nippers.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different grades of Gunpla, and how do they differ?

Q: What are the different grades of Gunpla, and how do they differ? A: Gunpla kits come in various grades, including Entry Grade (EG formally FG) High Grade (HG), Master Grade (MG), Perfect Grade (PG), Real Grade (RG), and Super Deformed (SD). Each grade varies in size, complexity, articulation, and detail, with PG being the most detailed and largest among standard models, while SDs are chibi-style representations of Gundam mobile suits.

How do I start with Gunpla building if I'm a beginner?

Start with an EG, HG or SD kit, as they are simpler and require minimal tools. Alternatively choose one of Mecha Express Australia's customised beginner boxes. Ensure you have a pair of plastic nippers and, optionally, a hobby knife and fine grit sandpaper. Follow the instruction manual, cut parts carefully from the runners, and piece them together. Over time, you can advance to more intricate models and detailing techniques.

Do I need to paint my Gunpla?

Painting is optional. Kits come pre-coloured, so painting is primarily for those who want to customize or achieve a specific look. If you decide to paint, acrylic or enamel hobby paints are recommended, along with proper priming.

How can I make my Gunpla look even more realistic?

Techniques like panel lining, using decals, weathering, and top-coating can enhance the realism of a kit. Panel lining emphasizes details, decals add logos and warnings, weathering gives a battle-worn look, and top-coating seals everything with a matte or glossy finish.

Are there limited edition or rare Gunpla kits?

Yes, Bandai regularly releases limited edition, event-exclusive, or special coating versions of kits. These can be more challenging to find and might be pricier than standard releases. Collectors often seek these kits for their uniqueness. Common names included:- P-Bandai (premium Bandai), Gundam Base Limited, and Event Limited
