Bandai 1/144 HGBD:R Jupitive Gundam

Hiroto's two-in-one Build Divers ace

The Jupitive Gundam is Hiroto's mobile suit from Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE, and it's genuinely a two-stage build: you assemble the compact Core Gundam first, then equip the Jupiter Armor to transform it into the full-sized Jupitive Gundam. If you like the idea of two Gunpla builds in one box, this is a fun one to add to the queue.

Build difficulty

This is a standard High Grade build: snap-fit, no cement and no paint required. Because you're effectively building the Core Gundam and then the Jupiter Armor on top of it, budget more time than a single-stage HG, somewhere in the two to three hour range depending on how careful you are with the effect parts.

Technical highlights

The kit is moulded in its finished colours: white and dark blue-grey body with red and yellow chest accents and a green visor. The backpack unit reconfigures into a beam Gatling gun once the Jupiter Armor is on, and the included effect parts (a beam saber blade and two wing-shaped thruster flares) are moulded in translucent pink plastic. A display stand is included for posing the transformed Jupitive Gundam.

What makes this kit special

  • Two Builds in One: build the compact Core Gundam, then equip the Jupiter Armor to transform it into the full-sized Jupitive Gundam.
  • Backpack Beam Gatling Gun: the Jupiter Armor's backpack unit forms a beam Gatling gun for long-range display poses.
  • Translucent Effect Parts: the beam saber blade and thruster flare parts are moulded in translucent pink plastic for an in-action look with no painting.
  • Snap-Fit, No Paint Needed: moulded in its finished colours, so it looks right straight off the runners.

What's in the box

  • Core Gundam body and Jupiter Armor parts
  • Beam rifle
  • Beam saber ×2
  • Beam saber blade effect part (translucent pink)
  • Thruster flare effect parts ×2 (translucent pink)
  • Display stand
  • Foil stickers
  • Instruction manual

Compatible accessories

The HGBD:R Jupitive Gundam is a 1/144 scale kit and ships with its own display stand for the transformed configuration. If you also want to pose the smaller Core Gundam on its own before you equip the Jupiter Armor, the Bandai Action Base 2 - Display Stand for 1/144 Scale Gunpla is the standard 1/144 pairing.

What to watch for

Two independent build reviews (a search-indexed GunJap review and a direct SUTD Gunpla Club build write-up) both flagged the same two things: nub placement that's easy to miss when trimming parts off the runner, and a loose fit on some of the armour connections, especially around the shoulders. That's a genuine two-source match, not a single reviewer's opinion, so it's worth going slow with the nippers and double-checking the shoulder armour seats properly during the build. One of the two reviews also flagged the beam saber storage point as fragile, so handle that part gently when swapping the saber in and out.

Build notes

No glue or paint required. A basic tool set (nippers, hobby knife, tweezers) covers everything. Take your time trimming parts off the runner given the nub-placement note above. Build time runs around two to three hours across both stages. Recommended 15 and up.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the two-in-one build actually work?

You build the smaller Core Gundam first, then fit the Jupiter Armor parts over it. Once armoured up, it becomes the full-sized Jupitive Gundam, with the backpack unit reconfiguring into a beam Gatling gun.

What accessories come in the box?

You get a beam rifle, two beam sabers, effect parts for the beam saber blade and thruster flares, and a display stand for the transformed Jupitive Gundam.

Do I need glue or paint for this kit?

No. It's a snap-fit High Grade kit moulded in its finished colours, so no cement or paint is needed for either the Core Gundam or the Jupiter Armor build.

Is Jupitive Gundam connected to an existing Gundam I'd already know?

No, it's an original Diver unit from Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE, piloted by Hiroto, rather than a rebuild of an existing mobile suit from an earlier series.

Is this a good kit for a first-time builder?

It's a reasonable step up from an absolute first kit since you're effectively building two stages (Core Gundam, then the Jupiter Armor), but it's still snap-fit with no glue or paint, so a patient newcomer can manage it fine.
