Bandai 1/144 HG Aegis Gundam

Athrun's other Gundam, before Justice

Before Athrun Zala flies the Justice, he flies this. The GAT-X303 Aegis is one of the five original prototypes stolen at the start of SEED, and its real trick isn't the beam rifle or the claws, it's the airframe underneath: the Aegis converts into a Mobile Armor with two distinct sub-modes, opening up a whole different way to fight than any of its sister Gundams.

This is the 2011 remastered High Grade, recoloured to match the Blu-ray release for the 10th anniversary of Gundam SEED.

Build difficulty

Snap-fit, moulded in colour, no glue required. The transformation adds a bit more assembly logic to track than a fixed-mode HG, but nothing here is genuinely hard. A solid choice for a builder with one or two kits behind them.

Technical highlights

The transformation is the whole story. In Mobile Suit mode the Aegis fights conventionally with a beam rifle, shield and a beam saber built into each limb. Converting to Mobile Armor gives you two distinct configurations: Cruise Mode for speed and long-range travel, and Attack Mode, where the Scylla energy cannon hidden in the chest becomes usable and the four claws rearrange to grapple a target before the cannon fires. Twin head-mounted CIWS round out the loadout. A stand adapter is included, and the kit is built to be compatible with a Bandai Action Base 2.

What's worth flagging instead is a naming trap: reviews and listings for the original 2002-era Aegis Gundam, the redesigned Aegis Gundam Redux, and this 2011 Blu-ray-colour remaster all circulate under similar names online. If you're comparing prices or reviews, check which release you're actually looking at.

Beyond that, this is a well-regarded HG from a kit generation that generally holds up, with the transformation as the standout feature rather than a source of complaints.

Builder tips: work through the Mobile Suit to Mobile Armor conversion slowly the first time, since it's easy to force a joint before you've found the right sequence. The Scylla cannon panel only opens properly in Attack Mode, so don't force it open while still in Mobile Suit configuration. Panel lining picks out the moulded detail nicely, since the remastered colours are fairly flat on their own.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
