Series Assembly Guide FAQ

Bandai 1/100 MG Char's Gelgoog Ver 2.0

The suit Char got too late

The Gelgoog was the first Zeon mass production suit that could genuinely match a Gundam, and it arrived far too late in the war to change anything. Char Aznable's commander-type MS-14S is the red one, and it is the machine he is flying by the end of the One Year War. Bandai first gave it the Master Grade treatment in 1996, then came back more than a decade later and rebuilt it properly.

This is that Ver. 2.0. Bigger, heavier and far better engineered than the kit it replaced.

Build difficulty

A full-sized Master Grade with a serious inner frame. Snap-fit, moulded in colour, no glue or paint required, but this is a substantial build rather than a quick one. It suits a builder who has finished at least one Master Grade, or a patient one stepping up from High Grades who is happy to spend a few sessions on it.

Technical highlights

The inner frame was completely revamped for a wider range of motion, and the armour parts are removable so you can set up a cross-section display showing the mechanism underneath. The Beam Naginata comes with optional parts to convert it into a sword type. The shield mounts to the back on an articulated arm for quick deployment rather than just clipping in place. Two blade antenna types are included, normal and stabiliser. You also get an in-scale Ele-car with Lalah Sune and Char Aznable figures, both sitting and standing.

What makes this kit special

  • Convertible Beam Naginata: optional parts turn the naginata into a sword-type weapon, so you get two melee looks.
  • Articulated shield mount arm: the shield connects to the back on a jointed arm and swings round for deployment.
  • Removable armour for cross-section display: strip panels back to show the revamped inner frame.
  • Ele-car with Lalah and Char figures: an in-scale vehicle plus both characters, sitting and standing.
  • Two blade antenna types: normal and stabiliser versions included.
  • Custom marking decals: a decal sheet for personalising the finish.

  • Beam Naginata with sword-type conversion parts

  • In-scale Ele-car
  • Lalah Sune and Char Aznable figures, sitting and standing

Compatible accessories

No display base is included with the kit. Given the bulk of the suit and the weight of the shield on its mount arm, a stand is worth having for anything beyond a standing pose. Pair it with the Bandai Action Base 4, the standard 1/100 display stand.

Build your Char collection

The obvious companion is the suit Char flies before this one. The Bandai 1/144 RG MS-06S Char's Zaku II is in stock now, and the Bandai 1/100 MG MSM-07S Z'Gok Char Custom keeps the red theme going at the same 1/100 scale.

For more Zeon in Master Grade, the Bandai 1/100 MG Gouf Ver 2.0 is also available.

What to watch for

Two things came up in what I could find, and neither reached the level of a widely repeated fault, so treat them as individual reports rather than settled fact.

The first is the hands. One video review of this kit lists them as its main weakness. That is a common complaint on Master Grades of this era generally, where hand parts tend to be the least refined thing in the box. The second is more encouraging: a detailed builder review admitted going in worried that the Gelgoog's bulk would kill its posing, and came away pleased with how well the arms and legs flex and support the weight. So the fat-body concern people have about this design does not appear to bear out in practice.

Builder tips: if the hands bother you, aftermarket manipulator sets in 1/100 are a straightforward swap and are the single most common upgrade on kits like this. Build the shield mount arm carefully and check the joint friction before you load the shield onto it. The cross-section display is worth setting up at least once given how much work went into the revamped frame.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife, sanding sticks and tweezers for the small figures. Expect four to six hours across a couple of sessions. The Lalah and Char figures are tiny and reward a careful hand-paint if you want them to read properly. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
