Series Assembly Guide FAQ

Bandai SDW Heroes Leif Gundam GP04

A cloaked wanderer with a GP04 silhouette

Leif Gundam GP04 is a travelling merchant from SD Gundam World Heroes: The Legend of Dragon Knight, known by the nickname Gerbera and built around the look of the Gundam GP04 prototype. Bandai released the kit in August 2022 in the SDW Heroes line. Its party trick is the cloak set: fit the hood and cloaks for a hidden, mysterious look, or leave them off to show the GP04-style shoulders and armour underneath.

Build difficulty

Skill Level 1. Bandai rates the kit for ages 8 and up. It is a snap-fit kit on the SDW Heroes grey inner frame, with no polycaps, and a reviewer notes parts can be separated from the runner by hand. You will need a steady hand for the foil stickers, which carry a fair share of the colour work on the head, shoulders and chest.

Technical highlights

  • Swappable cloak set: head hood, front cloak and side cloaks, plus a separate chest part for when the cloak is removed.
  • Three-prong joint on the backpack that takes the Quartet dagger and, per the instruction manual, weapons from other SDW Heroes and SD Sangoku kits.
  • Shoulder armour that pulls out sideways and a wide-ranging neck, the same format as the other SDW Heroes kits.
  • A 3 mm hole in the crotch for display stands (stand not included).

What makes this kit special

  • Two looks in one kit: a fully cloaked form and a lighter cloak-off form, switched by swapping cloak parts.
  • A shield for another hero: the box includes the Sincerity Shield made for the separately sold SDW Heroes Night Strike Gundam, and Bandai says part of the cloak can also be fitted to that kit.
  • GP04 Gerbera motif: the curved shoulders and the three-prong backpack nod to the 0083 prototype.

What's in the box

  • Leif Gundam GP04 runners in white, blue, dark grey and red, with the grey SDW Heroes inner frame
  • Cloak set (hood, front cloak, side cloaks) and cloak-off chest part
  • Quartet dagger
  • Sincerity Shield (for the SDW Heroes Night Strike Gundam, sold separately)
  • Sticker sheet
  • Instruction manual

Not included: a display stand, and the Night Strike Gundam itself.

Compatible accessories

There is a 3 mm hole in the crotch for standard display stands, sold separately. The backpack joint accepts weapons from other SDW Heroes kits, though not necessarily all of them.

What to watch for

Drawing on two Japanese builder reviews. English-language coverage of this kit is thin, so treat the points below as reviewer notes rather than confirmed patterns:

  • Both reviewers call the colour separation broad and say the stickers leave a lot of engraving and trim uncoloured, and one adds that the foil stickers land on uneven surfaces, so some painting helps if you want a sharper finish.
  • One reviewer found a cheek section and the rear protrusion have no colour or sticker at all, and the black Quartet dagger needs silver paint for its blade.
  • Both reviewers note the Quartet is the only weapon in the box, so poses are fairly simple.
  • With the cloak fitted, movement is limited: one reviewer reports the head barely tilts under the backpack and hood, and that the cloak hides the torso so waist twists show little.
  • One reviewer found seams on the helmet back, the hood and the shoulder armour.

Both reviewers still liked the GP04-inspired design and the cloak change.

Build notes

No glue is needed. Bandai rates the kit for ages 8 and up. Parts can come off the runner by hand, but nippers and a hobby knife will give a cleaner result. Test-fit the front cloak carefully: one reviewer notes the red armour can come off with the chest part when you swap it.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.1. Most adults & children can assemble Skill Level 1 kits with little to no difficulty. Very basic hobby tools are recommended including a pair of nippers, a hobby knife, but are not essential. No Glue is needed for these kits. Kits are all snap together build and most parts can be removed by twisting and pushing without the need to snip with nippers.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
