Bandai Plannosaurus Brachiosaurus

Brachiosaurus, built from the skeleton out

Plannosaurus is Bandai's dinosaur model-kit line, and this is number 10 in the series, the super-large late Jurassic sauropod Brachiosaurus. You build it in two stages: first the skeleton, so you can see how the animal is put together, then the outer skin parts that restore its shape. It stands on its own display base when you are done.

Bandai says no tools or adhesives are needed, so it is an easy first dinosaur kit. The parts are colour-moulded, which keeps painting to a minimum, and the box is rated for ages 6 and up by Bandai.

What makes this kit special

  • Skeletal build, then dinosaur build: Assemble the skeleton piece by piece, then attach the skin parts over the top.
  • Based on fossils: The nasal cavity on top of the head, the row of teeth and the long forelimbs that sit higher than the hips are shaped from fossil evidence.
  • A neck that moves smoothly: Bandai highlights lowering the neck from the base, as if drinking water or eating grass at ground level.
  • Detailed neck structure: The neck shows the neural spines that support the neck muscles, the overlapping bones and the gaps down the sides.
  • Powerful tail: The tail is short for a sauropod and is thought to have been a defence against predators.
  • Claws you cannot see: The thumb claws on the forelimbs and the tiptoe shape of the hind limbs are built from the skeleton even though the skin covers them.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.1 Most adults & children can assemble Skill Level 1 kits with little to no difficulty. Very basic hobby tools are recommended including a pair of nippers, a hobby knife, but are not essential. No Glue is needed for these kits. Kits are all snap together build and most parts can be removed by twisting and pushing without the need to snip with nippers.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
