Bandai HG 1/144 Military Police Zaku - GQuuuuuuX Series

Bandai HG 1/144 Military Police Zaku - GQuuuuuuX Series

The HG 1/144 Military Police Zaku is a law enforcement variant of the iconic Zaku II from Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, brought to life as a High Grade snap-fit kit by Bandai Spirits. Not every Zaku charges into battle. The Military Police variant represents a different side of Zeon mobile suit operations, where authority and distinctive markings matter as much as firepower. This kit adds genuine depth to your GQuuuuuuX collection, telling a story about occupation, peacekeeping, and the infrastructure behind Zeon's military presence that frontline units simply can't.

The HG Military Police Zaku features unique law enforcement markings and a non-combat equipment loadout including a baton and riot shield, distinguishing it from standard Zaku II combat variants in the GQuuuuuuX lineup.

This kit is designed for beginner to intermediate builders. The snap-fit system means no glue is required, and the police colour scheme is achieved through part moulding without painting. The Military Police Zaku pairs naturally with the Zaku (GQ), Char's Zaku (GQ), and the Gelgoog ace customs to build out a complete picture of Zeon forces in the GQuuuuuuX era.

What Makes This Kit Special

  • Unique Military Police Configuration: Law enforcement variant with distinctive MP markings and colour scheme that sets it apart from all standard Zaku II combat releases.
  • Baton Weapon: Non-lethal enforcement tool included, a unique accessory not found in standard Zaku kits.
  • Riot Shield: Defensive riot control equipment for blocking stances and authority display poses.
  • Zaku Machine Gun: Standard armament included for when firepower is required.
  • Colour-Separated Police Livery: MP colour scheme achieved through part moulding, no painting required.
  • Multiple Hand Parts: For various equipment and weapon configurations.
  • Snap-Fit Assembly: No glue required. Beginner-friendly build with clean part separation.

Builder Notes

A kit with genuine character and a distinctive visual identity in the HG lineup. The Police Zaku is well-engineered overall, but a few things are worth knowing before you sit down.

Marking Sticker Fragility (Most Common Build Issue): The marking sticker sheet includes a number of small, detailed decals for the Police Zaku's insignia, unit numbering, and tactical markings. Builders consistently report these tearing or creasing during application, particularly on curved or recessed surfaces. The sticker material is thin and does not recover from repositioning attempts. Apply each sticker with tweezers rather than fingers, in one confident placement. A thin coat of Mr. Mark Setter applied to the plastic first will improve adhesion and reduce lifting at the edges. The fact that the community has already produced aftermarket waterslide replacement sets for this kit is a reliable signal that the stock stickers are the weakest part of the build.

Clear Shoulder Warning Light Parts: The signature emergency lights in the shoulder armour are rendered in clear orange plastic. Clear parts show nub marks and fine scratches far more visibly than coloured runners. When removing these pieces from the sprue, cut generously away from the part first, then clean the nub stub with a blade rather than sanding aggressively. Work up from 1500 grit and finish with a coat of Mr. Hobby Mr. Super Clear Gloss to restore optical clarity. This step makes a real difference on clear parts that sit prominently at shoulder height.

Ankle Joint Stiffness and Cracking Risk: Some builders report tight ankle joints straight from the box, with isolated cases of the ankle assembly cracking when forced. Do not force any joint that resists. If the ankle feels stiff, work it through its range of motion gradually several times before final assembly rather than applying sustained pressure. A very light sanding of the ball joint peg will free it up more safely than forcing.

Baton and Sasumata Fragility: The riot control accessories are a highlight of this kit but are also fragile. The sasumata (the restraining fork) has a forked head with thin tips that are easy to stress or snap if the sprue gate is removed carelessly. Use sharp nippers and cut away from the fork tips, not toward them. Clean up with a blade rather than sanding the fork ends.

Mono-Eye Lens Placement: The mono-eye is adjustable via the standard HG track mechanism, which is a nice feature. The lens is a small round sticker applied to a clear dome. It needs to be placed cleanly on the first attempt — once the sticker contacts the clear plastic surface, repositioning will wrinkle it. Use tweezers, centre it carefully, and press firmly from the middle outward.

Stability Rating: 8/10. The Police Zaku carries the broad foot profile of the classic Zaku II lineage, which means it stands confidently on its own. The independently moving shoulder blocks add visual dynamism without affecting balance. No Action Base required for standard display. Once the ankle joint is properly worked in during assembly, this kit is a solid shelf piece.

The Fixes: Apply Mr. Mark Setter to the plastic before placing any marking sticker. Handle clear shoulder light parts with a blade rather than coarse sandpaper, and finish with Mr. Hobby Mr. Super Clear Gloss. Work the ankle joint in gently rather than forcing it. Cut away from the sasumata fork tips during nub removal.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Absolutely! Especially the HG kits, which are known for their fewer parts and simplicity, making them a great starting point for new builders.

What is the level of detail in the MG and RG hottest sellers?

MG kits boast a detailed inner frame and additional parts, while RG combines MG’s complexity with HG’s size for an intricate, compact build.

Can I get replacement parts if I lose some during the build?

Yes, if you buy a kit from Gundam Express Australia we will source replacement parts for you. This is not a quick process as parts need to come from Bandai in Japan.
