Bandai 1/100 MG Neo Zeon MSN-04 Sazabi Ver.Ka

Bandai 1/100 MG Neo Zeon MSN-04 Sazabi Ver. Ka

The MG 1/100 MSN-04 Sazabi Ver. Ka is one of the most celebrated Master Grade releases in the entire Gunpla line. This is Char Aznable's final mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, brought into your collection through Hajime Katoki's precise Ver. Ka treatment. The silver metallic inner frame is visible straight from the box without any painting, and the deep crimson armour panels sit over it with excellent colour separation throughout.

The MG Sazabi Ver. Ka is widely regarded as a benchmark Master Grade kit, combining a complex inner frame with one of the most distinctive silhouettes in the Universal Century.

The build is substantial. At 3kg boxed, this is a large kit with a high part count, and the inner frame construction alone is a rewarding experience before the armour goes on. The six detachable funnels store in the backpack and can be posed in deployed formation. The mono-eye is compatible with a separately sold green LED unit for an illuminated display finish.

What Makes This Kit Special

  • Silver Metallic Inner Frame: Pre-coloured metallic frame visible through armour gaps, no paint required for the frame detail
  • Emotion Manipulator SP Hands: Articulated finger parts for expressive, natural-looking poses
  • Six Detachable Funnels: Store in the backpack or deploy in formation for dynamic display options
  • Four-Way Opening Apogee Motor Cover: Accurate recreation of the Sazabi's distinctive thruster detail

  • Mono-Eye Compatibility: Designed to accept a separately sold green LED unit for an illuminated mono-eye
  • Waterslide Decals Included: Ver. Ka-style markings for a clean, panel-marked finish

Builder Notes

The MG Sazabi Ver.Ka is Bandai's definitive take on Char's final mobile suit and the engineering shows — over 480 parts, standing taller than the MG The O, with a full inner frame and transformation gimmick. It is not a beginner kit. That said, most of the build is straightforward. The issues that exist are concentrated, and all of them are manageable with the right preparation.

Head Panel Fit (Most Common Fit Issue): The head is engineered to open for monoeye rotation, which requires it to split in a specific way. On many kits the head panels do not close flush after assembly, leaving a visible gap. The cause is minor mould variance at the inner contact points. Before closing the head permanently, dry-fit it and identify which contact surfaces are causing the interference. Light sanding with a fine sanding stick on the mating edges resolves it cleanly. Do this before attaching any detail parts to the head assembly.

Funnel Assembly: Each of the six funnels is made up of around nine parts and the internal mechanism moves between deployed and stowed modes. The flaps do not positively lock when retracted, which makes the funnels feel loose in the closed position. This is by design, not a defect, but it is disorienting mid-build. Read the manual carefully before attempting the funnels and build one first as a test piece before committing to all six. Once you understand the mechanism the rest go together much faster.

Knee Guard Hidden Slots: The knee armour pieces attach into recessed slots that are not obvious from the manual, and the slots are only accessible after surrounding parts are already in place. Several builders report assembly confusion here. Study the knee section of the manual closely before building the leg armour and identify the slot positions on the inner frame before you snap anything closed around them.

Hip Polycap Sag (Most Common Long-Term Issue): The Sazabi is a heavy kit. The torso, backpack, and shoulders carry significant mass that loads directly onto the hip ball-joint polycaps. Over months of display, these joints soften and the torso begins to list. The fix is preventative: during assembly, apply a thin layer of plastic cement to each hip ball-joint peg and allow it to set completely before attaching the upper body. Nail polish works as an alternative using the same method. A second layer can be applied if needed. This is the single most important step for long-term display stability.

Waist Skirts Popping Off: The large side and rear skirt armour pieces connect via ball joints that can pop free during posing. This is a deliberate engineering choice to allow leg clearance. If a skirt is ejecting regularly during display repositioning, apply a thin layer of plastic cement to the ball peg, allow to fully set, and reattach.

Waterslide Decals: The kit includes a full Ver.Ka waterslide decal sheet plus a small number of stickers for red colour accent details. The waterslides are extensive, as is Katoki standard. Apply them over a gloss coat, use Mr. Mark Softer to settle them into panel lines and curved surfaces, then seal with Mr. Hobby Mr. Super Clear once dry. Do not apply Mr. Mark Softer directly to the red plastic — test first on an inconspicuous area as it can affect some red pigments.

Nub Marks: Bandai used small, well-placed gates on most of the kit, but several areas — particularly on the larger red armour panels — have prominent gate connections that leave visible marks. Plan extra cleanup time for the outer leg armour, backpack, and shoulder pieces. A sharp hobby knife and fine sanding stick are the right tools here.

Forearm Thruster Flaps: The forearm side panels deploy to reveal thrusters in combat mode. They require two distinct clicks to fully extend. Most builders stop at the first click and wonder why the thrusters are still hidden. Push through to the second click.

Stability Rating: 8/10. The wide, flat feet handle the kit's weight well in a standing pose. The hip polycap joints are the only credible long-term stability concern, and they are easily addressed during the build. An Action Base connection point exists below the backpack, but the arm of any stand will sit directly against the rear skirt armour, which is awkward. For standard display, no base is required once the hip joints are treated.

The Fixes: Sand the head panel contact surfaces for flush closure before assembly. Treat both hip ball-joint pegs with plastic cement during the build to prevent long-term torso sag. Build one funnel as a test piece before committing to all six. Identify the knee guard hidden slots on the inner frame before closing the surrounding armour. Apply waterslide decals over gloss, use Mr. Mark Softer for curved surfaces, and seal with Mr. Super Clear.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.3. Basic modeling skills are essential. These kits are not recommended for beginners or children due to the high level of complexity of assembly and the sheer volume of parts. Experience in building more complex Gunpla models is recommended. Parental supervision is essential. A full set of hobby tools is recommended that includes, nippers, hobby knives, sandpaper, sanding sticks, files, buffing files, glues, tweezers, and decal adhesive/softener. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes these Gunpla kits the hottest sellers?

These kits are fan favourites for their detailed design, affordability, and build size, offering a balanced and enjoyable building experience.

Are these hottest seller kits suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! Especially the HG kits, which are known for their fewer parts and simplicity, making them a great starting point for new builders.

What is the level of detail in the MG and RG hottest sellers?

MG kits boast a detailed inner frame and additional parts, while RG combines MG’s complexity with HG’s size for an intricate, compact build.

Can I get replacement parts if I lose some during the build?

Yes, if you buy a kit from Gundam Express Australia we will source replacement parts for you. This is not a quick process as parts need to come from Bandai in Japan.

How much space will I need to display these Gunpla?

HG and RG Gundam kits are compact, while MG Gundam are larger but still manageable. You won’t need too much space to showcase these masterpieces beautifully.
