Bandai 1/144 RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0

Bandai 1/144 RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0

The Bandai 1/144 RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0 is the definitive Real Grade version of Gundam's original mobile suit. This is the RX-78-2 that started it all, now rebuilt from the ground up with modern RG engineering. Ver.2.0 addresses every limitation of the 2010 original with a completely redesigned inner frame, improved articulation, and enhanced colour separation. For builders who want the iconic Gundam in Real Grade form, this is the version to get.

This kit is designed for intermediate to advanced builders and features over 200 parts with Real Grade-level detail. The 1/144 scale balances premium engineering with shelf-friendly size, making it ideal for display without requiring massive space.

What makes Ver.2.0 special is the engineering evolution. The new inner frame uses Bandai's Advanced MS Joint system for stable, dynamic poses that the original RG couldn't achieve. The colour separation is excellent straight from the box. The panel lines are sharp and detailed. Compared to the 2010 RG RX-78-2, Ver.2.0 offers significantly better stability, wider range of motion, and more accurate proportions. This is the RX-78-2 that Real Grade was always meant to deliver.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Real Grade Gundam kits different from other grades like High Grade (HG) or Master Grade (MG)?

Real Grade kits are designed to offer intricate details and mechanical inner frames at a smaller 1/144 scale, similar to High Grade. They combine aspects of both HG and MG kits, offering the detailing and complexity of MG models but at a smaller size. They often come with many small parts and colour separations that allow for a detailed finish without the need for painting.

How long does it typically take to assemble a Real Grade Gundam?

It varies based on one's experience and the specific model, but on average, building an RG kit can take anywhere from 5 to 12 hours. Some intricate models with lots of decals and parts might take even longer, especially if you're meticulous about details.

Do I need to paint my Real Grade Gundam?

RG kits are designed with colour separation in mind, so they often look great straight out of the box without any painting. However, many modelers choose to paint and customize their kits for an even more detailed and personalized finish.

Are there any special tools or equipment I should have before starting my Real Grade kit?

We recommended to have a few basic modeling tools for a better experience. These might include a pair of plastic nippers for cutting parts from the runners, a hobby knife for cleaning up nubs, and tweezers for applying stickers or decals. Some builders also use panel lining pens or washes to highlight details.

I've heard that RG kits are delicate. Is there anything I should be cautious about when building one?

Due to their intricate details and small parts, RG kits can be more delicate than their HG or MG counterparts. It's essential to handle parts with care, especially the inner frame pieces. Always follow the instructions closely, and be gentle when snapping pieces together to avoid breaking or stressing the plastic.
