Bandai RG 1/144 Wing Gundam - Real Grade Gunpla

The Bandai 1/144 Real Grade XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam is Heero Yuy's mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. This Real Grade release captures the Wing Gundam's distinctive bird-like transformation with advanced inner frame, Buster Rifle, and full transformation to Bird Mode without parts swapping. It's the definitive 1/144 scale version of the After Colony timeline's most iconic mobile suit.

This kit includes approximately 300 parts and features snap-fit construction with no glue required. The Real Grade engineering is designed for intermediate to advanced builders with previous Gunpla experience.

The build centres on the advanced Real Grade inner frame that provides Master Grade-level articulation in 1/144 scale. You get the Buster Rifle, shield, beam saber, and articulated wing system with MS joints for dynamic posing. The colour separation delivers the Wing Gundam's white, blue, red, and yellow scheme with minimal painting needed. The engineering features full transformation to Bird Mode without parts swapping and articulated wings that fold and spread for flight configurations. The kit includes realistic water slide decals and action base support parts for aerial display poses.

What Makes This Kit Special

  • Real Grade Inner Frame: Advanced articulated frame provides Master Grade-level posability in 1/144 scale
  • Bird Mode Transformation: Full transformation to flight mode without parts swapping
  • Articulated Wing System: MS joints allow wings to fold, spread, and articulate for dynamic poses
  • Buster Rifle Included: Signature high-powered beam weapon
  • Built-In Gimmicks: Torso and shoulder mechanisms for weapon-holding poses
  • Water Slide Decals: Realistic markings for enhanced surface detail
  • Action Base Support Parts: Dedicated parts for aerial display configurations
  • Anime Accurate Proportions: Recreates the Wing Gundam's appearance from the series

Known Build Considerations

This is widely cited as the point where the Real Grade line perfected its transition away from pre-moulded inner frames, making it one of the best RG kits available. That said, there are a few things worth knowing to get the best results from your build and transformation.

The Undergate Cleaning Requirement (Most Important): This kit uses extensive undergating to hide nub marks, which is great for aesthetics. However, if you don't clean the undergates 100% flush, the armour panels (especially on the legs) will not close properly, creating unsightly gaps that are often mistaken for bad moulding. This is the most commonly reported issue and it's entirely preventable. Take your time with nub cleanup, use a hobby knife or glass file to get the undergates perfectly flush, and test-fit armour panels before final assembly. This extra attention to cleanup makes a huge difference in the final result.

Side Skirt Pop-Off: The side skirts attach via a very small ball joint to allow for the wide leg spread of Bird Mode. Because the contact point is so small, they tend to pop off frequently during posing. A tiny drop of clear nail polish on the ball joint significantly reduces the pop-off issue without compromising the transformation mechanism. This is a simple fix that makes posing much less frustrating.

Transformation Slide Mechanism: The mechanism that slides the head into the chest for Bird Mode is tight. If there's even a tiny bit of paint or nub debris in that track, the mechanism can jam and snap the thin guiding rails. Make absolutely sure the transformation track is clean and debris-free before attempting the first transformation. Test the slide mechanism gently before forcing anything.

Shoulder Socket Joint (Part G1 1): Unlike older kits with a peg, this uses a ball-and-socket connection inside the chest. If you force the arm in at the wrong angle, you can stress the cup of the socket. Take your time during shoulder assembly and make sure the ball is aligned with the socket before pressing it in. Don't force it at an angle.

V-Fin Safety: Because it's a Real Grade, the V-fin is exceptionally sharp. During nub removal, it's very easy to accidentally clip the actual tip of the antenna if you aren't using a high-quality single-blade nipper. Cut away from the part and leave a bit of nub to sand down rather than trying to cut flush in one go.

Shield Weight vs. Forearm Clip: While the kit is stable, the shield is heavy. The clip that attaches it to the back of the forearm can become fatigued after a dozen transformations, eventually losing its grip. If you're planning to transform the kit frequently, be gentle with the shield clip. For long-term display, consider posing with the shield on the arm rather than clipped to the back.

Bird Mode Display: If you plan on keeping it in Bird Mode, invest in an Action Base 2 or 5. The included adapter is okay, but the kit's centre of gravity shifts significantly in bird form, making it prone to nose-diving off a shelf without proper support.

Stability Rating: 9.5/10. This is one of the most stable Real Grade kits in the entire line. The TV version uses modern RG engineering that eliminates the early RG syndrome issues. Once you've addressed the side skirt ball joints and cleaned the undergates properly, this kit is rock solid in both mobile suit and Bird Mode.

The Fixes: Clean undergates 100% flush before closing armour panels. Apply clear nail polish to side skirt ball joints to prevent pop-offs. Keep the transformation track clean and debris-free. Ensure the Buster Rifle tab is fully clicked into the palm to prevent arm sag. Use an Action Base for Bird Mode display.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different grades of Gunpla, and how do they differ?

Q: What are the different grades of Gunpla, and how do they differ? A: Gunpla kits come in various grades, including Entry Grade (EG formally FG) High Grade (HG), Master Grade (MG), Perfect Grade (PG), Real Grade (RG), and Super Deformed (SD). Each grade varies in size, complexity, articulation, and detail, with PG being the most detailed and largest among standard models, while SDs are chibi-style representations of Gundam mobile suits.

How do I start with Gunpla building if I'm a beginner?

Start with an EG, HG or SD kit, as they are simpler and require minimal tools. Alternatively choose one of Gundam Express Australia's customised beginner boxes. Ensure you have a pair of plastic nippers and, optionally, a hobby knife and fine grit sandpaper. Follow the instruction manual, cut parts carefully from the runners, and piece them together. Over time, you can advance to more intricate models and detailing techniques.

Do I need to paint my Gunpla?

Painting is optional. Kits come pre-coloured, so painting is primarily for those who want to customize or achieve a specific look. If you decide to paint, acrylic or enamel hobby paints are recommended, along with proper priming.

How can I make my Gunpla look even more realistic?

Techniques like panel lining, using decals, weathering, and top-coating can enhance the realism of a kit. Panel lining emphasizes details, decals add logos and warnings, weathering gives a battle-worn look, and top-coating seals everything with a matte or glossy finish.

Are there limited edition or rare Gunpla kits?

Yes, Bandai regularly releases limited edition, event-exclusive, or special coating versions of kits. These can be more challenging to find and might be pricier than standard releases. Collectors often seek these kits for their uniqueness. Common names included:- P-Bandai (premium Bandai), Gundam Base Limited, and Event Limited
