Bandai 1/1700 EX Model EX-31 White Base

The ship that carried the whole story

Everything in the original Mobile Suit Gundam happens because this ship keeps flying. The White Base takes off with a half-trained crew, a prototype it should not have, and nowhere safe to land, and it just keeps going. Most Gunpla shelves are full of the machines that launched from it. This is the thing they launched from.

Bandai's EX Model line exists for exactly this: the ships, the carriers and the support craft that never get a Master Grade. It is a different kind of build to a mobile suit, and if you have only ever done suits, that is the reason to try one.

Build difficulty

Be clear-eyed about this one. It is rated 15 and over, and paint is part of the job rather than an optional extra. There is almost no colour separation: the parts come in white, red and grey, and everything else on the finished ship is down to you. The colour guide in the instructions is in Japanese only. Assembly itself is not hard, and one builder review put the whole thing together without adhesive apart from the Guntank's cannon, which does want a drop of glue to stay put. What you are signing up for is a straightforward assembly followed by the painting session that makes it look like the photos.

Technical highlights

What the EX Model line trades colour separation for is surface detail, and this kit is full of it. The forward mobile suit hatches open on both sides by swapping parts, and the hangars underneath are moulded inside, not hollow. Three mobile suit beds are included so you can lay the machines out in the bay. The main gun turret has a removable cover, rotates, and can be built deployed. The twin machine cannons open the same way. Both mega particle cannons come with two sets of covers so you can pick the early-series or later-series look, and there are enough parts to run either style on either side. The engine block has its mechanicals reproduced inside and detaches the way it does in the show, and the engine covers and rear hatch come off to show what is underneath. Swap the central deck and you can pose the Guntank rolling down out of the ship. A dedicated display base is included.

What to watch for

These are the points that came up across independent builder coverage and the manufacturer's own material.

  • Colour separation is minimal, and that is the headline. White, red and grey parts, and nothing else. Straight off the runner it looks plain next to the box photos, because the box photos are of a painted example. Go in expecting to paint it.
  • The colour guide is in Japanese only. The assembly diagrams are clear enough to follow without reading Japanese, but the paint callouts are not.
  • The Guntank's 120mm cannons fall out. One builder review flags this specifically and recommends a drop of cement there even though the rest of the kit goes together without adhesive.
  • The included mobile suits are display pieces, not models. The Gundam and the Core Boosters are single-part mouldings and do not articulate. The Guntank is five parts, the Gun Perry four. They are there to populate the ship, not to build.
  • No clear parts and no metal parts. If you have built other kits in this line and are expecting metal detailing, this one does not have it.
  • The display base has no locating pin. The ship rests on it. One builder reports it sits stably that way, but it is not a locking mount, so do not expect to angle it.

Builder tips. Decide which mega particle cannon style you want before you start, because both sets are supplied and it is easier to commit early. Paint the interiors before you close the hangars up, since almost none of it is reachable afterwards. A grey panel wash over white plastic does more for this kit than anything else you can do in an hour. And leave the hatches, engine covers and rear hatch unglued so you can keep opening them.

Build notes

Nippers, a hobby knife and a sanding stick for nub clean-up, plus cement for the Guntank's cannons. Paint is what turns this from an assembly into a model, so plan for it. Rated 15 and over by Bandai. There is no articulation to build in, so the time goes into surface work rather than joints.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.3. Basic modeling skills are essential. These kits are not recommended for beginners or children due to the high level of complexity of assembly and the sheer volume of parts. Experience in building more complex Gunpla models is recommended. Parental supervision is essential. A full set of hobby tools is recommended that includes, nippers, hobby knives, sandpaper, sanding sticks, files, buffing files, glues, tweezers, and decal adhesive/softener. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the EX Model White Base need paint?

For the intended finish, yes. The kit is moulded in three flat colours, white, red and grey, and there is very little colour separation beyond that. It will assemble and sit on a shelf unpainted, but it will look plain next to the box photos, which show a painted example. The colour guide in the instruction sheet is in Japanese only, so plan your palette before you start.

Does it need cement or glue, or is it a snap build?

It is a snap-fit build, with one exception. One builder review assembled the entire ship without adhesive apart from the Guntank's 120mm cannons, which come loose easily and want a drop of cement. Nothing else needs glue, and the hatches, engine covers and rear hatch are better left unglued so you can keep opening them. We rate it Skill Level 3 on the Mecha Express scale and Bandai rate the box 15 and over, so having cement on hand is sensible even if you barely use it. Paint is the part to plan for, not glue.

What is included besides the ship?

All of them fit inside the White Base, and three mobile suit beds are included so you can lay them out in the hangar. A dedicated display base is included as well. This is the complete set, not a version of it.

How big is the finished model?

At 1/1700 it takes up roughly the same shelf space as a standard 1/144 mobile suit, which surprises people who assume a capital ship means a metre of plastic. It is wide rather than tall, so measure the depth of your shelf rather than the height.

Is this a good first EX Model kit?

It is a good one if you already enjoy painting. There is no articulation to build, so the assembly is straightforward and the whole reward is in surface work: panel lining, a wash, and paint on the parts that are not colour separated. If you are new to Gunpla and want something that looks finished straight off the runner, a snap-fit High Grade is a better starting point and this is a better second step.

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
