Bandai 1/144 HGUC Geara Zulu

Neo Zeon's late-war workhorse

By the time of Gundam Unicorn, Neo Zeon's remnants need a mass-production suit that can actually pressure Londo Bell. The AMS-129 Geara Zulu is the answer: a compact, aggressive-looking grunt suit with a signature mono-eye monofilament rail across the head that sweeps forward and back. It is cannon fodder in the strict military sense and one of the more distinctive-looking grunt suits Bandai has put into HGUC.

This is the 2009 High Grade Universal Century release.

Build difficulty

Snap-fit and moulded in colour, no glue required. The build itself is straightforward, but it is a sticker-heavy kit: there is no white or black plastic in the box, so every marking is a sticker sheet application rather than pre-moulded colour. Budget extra time for that rather than for the assembly itself. One part to watch is the skirt armour, which is moulded as a single fused piece and needs a clean cut down the seam.

What to watch for

The honest limitation is the sticker sheet. There is no white or black plastic anywhere in the box, so every marking is a sticker, and even with all of them applied one review notes the finish still isn't perfectly colour-accurate to the source art. That is a genuine trade-off rather than a defect, and it is the same review that otherwise rates the articulation and moveable mono-eye as making the kit feel newer than it is.

The other thing to know before you start is the skirt armour, which is a single fused piece needing a clean cut down the seam. Take your time there, since a rushed cut is the one part of this build most likely to leave a visible mark.

Builder tips: plan for sticker application time, not just assembly time, and use tweezers and a damp cotton bud to nudge stickers into place. Score the skirt seam lightly before committing to the full cut. The monofilament rail is delicate, so work it gently the first few times rather than forcing the slide.

Build notes

No glue and no paint required. Nippers, a hobby knife, sanding sticks and tweezers for the sticker work. Expect around an hour and a half of assembly plus extra time for stickers. Recommended age 15 and over.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
