The GM that turned up carrying everything

The RGM-79 GM is the Federation's answer to mass production, the suit that made the war winnable by existing in numbers rather than by being special. This one is the plain GM, no ace pilot and no custom colours, but Bandai has given it one of the heaviest armament loads of any base GM kit they have released: shoulder cannon, missile pods, beam rifle, hyper bazooka, two types of beam spray gun and a pair of beam sabers.

It comes from Bandai's MSD line, the Mobile Suit Discovery design series, and Bandai files the kit under Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island. If you want a Federation grunt suit that can be built as a support gun platform rather than a rifleman, this is the one.

Build difficulty

Straightforward for a High Grade. Bandai rates the box 8 and over and the whole kit is snap-fit with no glue needed. The part count is normal for the grade; what is not normal is the accessory count, so clear a bit of desk space and keep the small parts corralled. Nippers and a hobby knife cover the tool list, with tweezers for the marking stickers.

Technical highlights

The headline is the equipment. The shoulder cannon and the missile pod set are both in the box, mounted through the same joint parts, which means you choose a loadout rather than running both at once. On the ground weapons side there is the beam rifle, the hyper bazooka, two types of beam spray gun, two beam sabers with a saber rack to stow them, and the shield. Hand parts are supplied in three types. The beam saber blades are moulded in translucent plastic. Marking stickers are designed by Katoki Hajime and there are two sheets of them.

What to watch for

Drawn from two independent Japanese build reviews of this specific 2023 release, plus Bandai's own product documentation and a reference wiki for the articulation note.

The torso tilts forwards only. Articulation is good for a GM and the kit poses well, but the reference documentation records the torso as tilting forwards rather than back, so backward-leaning heroic poses are off the table. Worth knowing before you plan a display stance around it.

The shoulder cannon wants filling. Body seams are mostly moulded out on this kit, which is a real improvement on older GM moulds, but some builders report a visible seam on the shoulder cannon itself. Not everyone raises it. If you are painting anyway, it is a five-minute job with putty.

Keep the accessories together. There are two equipment sets, the full ground-weapon spread and three types of hand parts in this box. The most common frustration reported is not a build fault, it is losing track of parts you are not currently using.

Builder tips. Decide your loadout before you start so you are not swapping joint parts mid-build. Apply the Katoki marking stickers with tweezers, and lay the sheet out first so you can see which markings pair up. Panel lining does a lot on a light grey colour scheme.

Build notes

No glue and no cement needed. No paint needed. Nippers, a hobby knife, a sanding stick and tweezers cover the tools. Expect an evening or two, most of which goes on the accessories and the marking stickers rather than the suit itself. Recommended age is 8 and over.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the shoulder cannon and the missile pods be fitted at the same time?

No. They are a parts swap. You build the GM with one or the other and change over when you want a different look. Both sets are in the box, so nothing is missing either way.

What weapons are included with this HG GM kit?

Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
